john deere b camshaft/governor question

I unbolted the governor housing cap and the cam shaft housing cap under it so i could free up the cam followers. I got them free up and i was able to turn the cam shaft gear and everything was turning good along with fan and magneto gears. When i tightened the governor housing cap and cam housing cap, it would not turn over, it wouldnt even budge. So i loosened those bolts just a little and it all turned over like before. Is something not lining up or what i cant figure out why this would happen. If anyone has any ideas help would greatly apprciated. Thank you

i had the mag off so i then put it on to see if that was the problem and its still doing it. What should i do?

i was just reading through a john deere restoration book and it said that the governor cover uses gaskets to adjust the lash between the two pinion gears. it also says its better to leave it a little loose then to go to tight because it wears the gears. So i guess i need to try that

Did you take the cap completely off and renove the gov. gear from making contact with the camshaft? If so, the gov. gear and camshaft gear are timed together. There are 2 inverted v's that are used to time the gears. Don't mess with the gaskets at the gov. gear cap if you didn't remove the fanshaft also. Sounds like the bearing in the gov. cover cap isn't seated in the bearing race, binding things up.

Tod I can't help you with you gov. question, but I've been looking for a book on restoring a n A john deere, What is the name and author of the restoration book you have?

I did take the governor cover completly off i didnt mess with the gaskets or anything and no i didnt do anything with the fan gears. so timing shouldnt be out of place
