Hello, I just got a jd 420 crawler with a loader it runs and works great, but one steering clutch pulls back real hard compaired to the other one. The side that works good I can pull back and steer if I use 2 fingers. But the other side its my whole hand and hard to stop the track. Any ideas what I can do to get it working like the easy one? Thanx for your time! Ben

The throwout bearing might need to be st closer or the brake tightened up, or both. You should be able to do either one thru the square cover on the top and also thru the barrel-bung cover behind your heel. If everything is rusted up you'll have to pull the final drive.

check first for a bent rod. Follow the rods back from the brake levers & carefully note the straightness. Any bent rods may be straightened back.

You need to ascertain what IS happening and what is NOT happening. When you pull back part way - the track should declutch but not brake. So, in this position, if on a hill, you should roll. Pull back further and then the brake engages. You need to know which is working, or which is not, and maybe neither. If the clutches are stuck - it can be from rust and moisture (very common) or from linkage out of adjustment. If the brake is not working - it can be out of linkage adjustment, out of "size" adjustment, wear, oil on the linings, or a linkage adjustment/repair.

What you need is a shop manual. Adjusting the clutches and brake on the 40 series crawler isn't hard, but exploded views and instructions make it a lot easier. You can also hit www. jdcrawlers dot com for more help.
