OT - Propane Water Heater Update

I posted earlier about my water heater that seemed to build up gas before the burner
actually ignited, and then when it did ignite it seemed like a small explosion.
Turns out those symptoms were exactly what it was doing, and the cause was a weak pilot.
Gas had to build up and get down to the too short pilot flame to ignite the burner,
even though the flame was high enough to heat the thermal couple and keep the valve on.
Gas company couldn't clean it/clear it either, they had to replace the pilot orifice.
So, $7.00 in parts and $135.00 for the man who knew how to fix it and I'm back in business.
I'm sure his company kept most of that money.
Just figured I'd share what I learned. It's cheaper per person that way!
Still a lot less than new, and cheap peace of mind considering everything that's in that shop.

(quoted from post at 22:37:40 11/05/12) Sometimes it takes someone smarter than ourselves to repair things. Now it will spring a leak. Stan
Blast it Stan, that would be just my luck!
But now if it does I'll blame you for jinxing it!

Now you can have peace of mind. The $135 might be cheap compared to the alternative. Come to think of it, our upstairs heating stove was doing that until the pilot just plain refused to stay lit. After I replaced the jet it didn't seem to flare as bad when it lit up. Our local hardware store sells a reamer for cleaning pilot jets and I've used one a few times, but it seems like I get too agressive and the holes end up bigger, which means more flame, which means the thermocouple burns out before it's time. It's best to just replace the jet and get it over with. Jim

(quoted from post at 23:56:33 11/05/12) i use tip cleaners for an oxy-acyteline torch to clean pilot jets.
I tried, and so did the guy from the gas company.
This orifice has a webbing in it that looks very much like a miniature version of a torch tip.
Multiple holes just barely big enough to see light through.
