New furnace time (heating and hot water)... Had some visits and offers and in the fine tune ???'s and deciding mode.....

Pretty much narrowed down to 2 offers that are about 4k apart...... The cheaper one has a couple minor inconveniences but liveable.... Boiler is not made in germany but has a good reputation.... More expensive is made in germany and don't have the inconveniences...

The headscratcher is....... SWMBO googled and had her boss check both contractors out..... The cheaper one has only been doing heating a couple years and is just a contractor (??) that just sells the package and subcontracts the installation....... Did the same thing with other unrelated stuff a year or two at a time in the past......

The more expensive guy is a technician himself the company he sells has it's own crews that he manages and does the final inspection......

He's been at it 20+ years....

Gut says the more expensive, but it's a chunk of change........ Is it worth it??

As an alternate opinion remember the older company started new at some point, back in the mid nineties I bought a house in the town near me and it needed a new furnace got a couple bids, one was
about $1500 higher than the other the more expensive was by a company that had been in business for a good amount of time the cheaper bid was by a guy just starting out so I went with the cheaper guy.He was looking for business and did a great job and the older company was out of business in 5 years so that knife cuts both ways.Studebaker had been selling cars for years when Toyota came on the scene bet folks were glad they boght the tried and tested Studebaker(LOL).

I know......... I kinda liked the cheaper guy too.. He told me a couple of things (requirements) that didn't pertain to our situation but were beneficial... Just the red flags went up when we saw where he had dabbled in several other home improvement related areas for a couple years at a time. Kind of a jack of all trades, master of none.... The more expensive guy just made us an offer we can't refuse tho (as soon as he puts it on paper)...

LOL nice try but they came out with man purses sometime in the 60's.......not only did my dad rant about man purses when they first came out so did Archie Bunker. Now stifle yourself!

Those bags were CVC (Combat Vehicle Crewman helmet) bags. Us real tankers didn't use em and called by anohter name, F@g bags. Maybe should have with having to carry the CTT and SQT manuals plus the individual training books for each soldier that we were in charge of. Darn things were more like a brief case than anything else.

We did carry them when I was an instructor, but only in the field. That's were we carried the CS grenades to use on the young officer students we had!

It was you turret fairies that started the trend in the first place dummy...... Everybody wanted to have a tanker bag (by whatever name folks tried to call it)... Them camo bags you all carried over your shoulders with notebooks and CTT manuals to cover up the lipstick and nylons in the bottom..... Heard ya'll even carried either in em during Desert Shield/Storm

Now, set down and behave yourself..........

Dave from what I have seen in your post you are just like most of us here. Not in the poor house but not rich either. Also you are looking at the furnace that you will be using when you retire or are just older. That 4K spread out over just ten years is just $400 per year.

So the lack of inconveniences and the fact the higher guy does the whole thing start to finish would make his system a better buy in my book.

With the other guy what happens a few years down the road when you have an issue with the furnace. The manufacturer says it is an installation problem and the installer says it is the furnace??? Guess who is no longer in the business?? Then you are stuck in the middle.

I always try to buy the best quality I can afford. This is on long term things. A good furnace most of the time will mean fewer head aches in the long run.

Pretty much had decided on the more expensive offer before posting.... Just wanted to get some feedback... Guess everyone is thinking about the same....... Asked the more expensive guy about service/repair calls.. He said he shows me what to service and leaves 5 years worth of expendables (steel grates) and shows up for any problems/adjustments (IAW chimney sweeper annual test) free for that 5 years and there are service techs (including himself) available 24/7 afterwards..... Cheaper guy says about the same but don't know where he'll be in 5 years.....

Do some more negotiating with the 20-year experienced guy. Maybe he can reduce the price a bit. Tell him that you would like to give him the job- - - "but............................"

I'm doing the same thing right now. My two recent bids were 21,000 apart. Course, that was geothermal.

Use your people skills (we know you gots 'em) and lay it out for the experienced guy. I'll bet he will meet you closer to the middle when he finds it is only the cost holding you up.

Regarding your topic - a "piece" of my mind isn't worth much. My
friends would probably tell you all of my mind isn't worth much.
Now "peace" of mind, that's something else altogether

I think the "worry" will always be there if we go with the one where the initial cash ouch will be forgotten soon enough on the other...
