well when i got there it was a 474 hydro not a 574
its a little rough in places it has a diesel
engine starts right up with no smoke has a brand
new starter and solenoid on it back tires are
about 30% has a nice factory canopy good front
tires now the bad news is it will barely move.the
hydro tranny must be shot.the overall appearence
of the tractor looks good.the owner moved to texas
so i was talking to him on the phone while looking
at it.he said he was most likely going to scrap
it.so i offered him $500 bucks and he took it.now
i am not sure what i am going to do with might
have to ponder on it for awhile.

Hi Rick, I didn't know IH made a 474 Hydro but everything behind engine is common to Hydro 84.
I looked in caseih.com parts and it does show parts for hydro transmission.
The engine should be a D-206 German Diesel which is an excellent engine. Keep the oil and filters changed and it will run for many years. Add some Diesel fuel conditioner to the tank every time you add Diesel to keep the Bosch injection pump lubed.

My I&T Service manual for 684 has a section on trouble shooting Hydro 84 transmission.

Good luck

I'd have reported them to the proper law enforcement agency and let them make the decision what to do.

I've had several hydraulic problems over the years with various tractors, and draining and cleaning up the system, replacing filters and replacing fluid has always fixed it.

Your results may vary.

get someone who knows or a service manual and diagnose the hydro as bad before you write it off. They can have problems on the outside that are easy to fix.

for your $500 investment so far, you can afford to get a rebuilt hydro unit and still have a handy tractor for less than market value. like geezer said, if the oil is sketchy, try changing it before you tear into the tractor.
good score!

Before doing a tear down, first inspect the oil for clarity to see that it's not milky/ water contaminated. if its good then first try changing all of the filters, and refill the oil to the correct level

Yes, I thought that my 666 hydro was headed for a rebuild, Buy it turned out to be a lot of rust from a hyd cylider i hadent used in about three years, a new set of filters and I was good to go.
