picture from the hood

saw a sign on the front lawn of this farm last week, for sale by owner,I think its 60 acres, right down the road from us,dont know how much
I know the father passed away,he was very old,and the one son farmed it,he is around 70,the brothers and sisters want to sell. Its sad because the farmer is real nice guy..He would like to keep farming it,but cant buy them out.

Nice.... Best thing anyone can do for their family is get rid of everything, set fire to the place, and leave the land to a stranger before they die...
That place has Larry the rock guy wrote all over it. Think of all the PA/NJ trips you'd save....

that's why people need a will. In this case to ptotect the son that kept the farm up all these years. I suspect the son that kept it going will just get his "share" of the proceedes and nothing for his sweat equity. Nice land and a pretty setting ..where is it located Ohio? PA? could even be the western part of new your state.

I don't believe in equity in wills. We had a neighbor who's daughter ran off with some guy before she even finished high school. They didn't hear from her for many years.

Their son farmed the land and took care of the folks for 30 years before they died. In their wills, they left half of the farm to the daughter - who didn't deserve anything, in my book. Son didn't fight it, but a couple years later he did himself in.

Dividing the estate equally is the only way to keep the kids from fighting over who gets what.

The one that gets the smaller piece will feel slighted, and get lawyers involved. In that case the only one who wins are the lawyers, but it's a scorched earth strategy: If I didn't get my "fair share" then nobody gets anything.

I think a lot of our societal problems are because people can't deal with grief. Mom/Dad died, I'm mad, someone's gotta PAY. Dog was running in the road and got run over, I'm mad, someone's gotta PAY. I was texting on my phone and ran into a bridge abutment, I'm mad, someone's gotta PAY. Kid lost football game, I'm mad, someone's gotta PAY. Money/revenge will make the hurt go away.

(quoted from post at 05:59:24 10/25/12) Its hard to believe how green it is down there still, its getting frozen up here pretty good now

I'm about a half hour west of where Larry took the picture. We had one good frost here bout 2 weeks ago (wiped out the peppers and tomatoes). Yesterday, it was almost 80 degrees. Saw a guy raking some nice alfafa yesterday, but it got rained on this morning! Lots of corn and beans still standing and the winter wheat is up about 2" in most fields.
Larry, did you get your home rented out?

'Gotta agree with you Dave2......that's got Larry's name written all over it! Larry, let us know what they are asking for it.

a will doesn't always fix the injustice. I've been there done that.took care of Dad for 18 years and kept the farm up and payed it off. just for an equal share, got flack from brother for not keeping it up to his standards, but he never did anything to help. got some extra because i was the executor, followed the will to the letter and some of them still weren't satisfied.so not farming anymore, to old to start over.just play with my tractors.

Sounds great Dave. but it's the 'when' part of 'before you die' part that's hard to peg down. You sure we don't have the same relatives?
I had a great uncle years ago, was suppose to die within weeks, sold and drank everything, left the kids crap, told EVERYONE what he thought of them, where to go, what to do when they got there.... lab test results weren't accurate... guess who died alone in a crummy trailer 30 years later????
And I think Larry isn't telling us he is secretly in the real estate business...cause he gets everyone's mouth watering over these scenic snapshots....

dad got caught in the same situation when grandad died, wound up paying about twice the price to his sisters, and his brothers heirs to keep the farm intact.he left the same place to us kids as a trust, and so far its worked out ok. but I can see where problems could happen down the line as one or the other wants to sell out. wife and i got sort of the same thing when her grandad died. was supposed to divide up his place and sell it off.she never was close to him since him and her grandmother had divorced probably 30 years before she was born. in fact we had been married 25 years before i ever even met the old fellow. he had one son who had lived on the place all his life and worked it.could have made a pretty good chunck of change selling it,but we took about 1/5 of its true worth from the boy because i didnt think it was right to move him off.and two of her three sisters went along. the other put hers up for sale and he bought it at auction and she made much more actual money, but i can look the fellow in the eye and am on good terms with her clan. the other sister alienated a whole branch of her own family. to me ,how this stuff works or wheather it works or not depends entirely on the family. sadly, most of the time it results in hard feelings.
