IIRC this happened in Italy so I'm guessing the only crime the seismologists are really guilty of is not belonging to a Union, belonging to a Union that didn't pay a big enough bribe (excuse me I meant to say " make a campaign contribution")to the party in power or didn't pay a big enough tribute to the local Don.
