Anybody know how to transfer auto title to Tennesse?

OT My daughter has moved to Tn and is driving an auto titled in my name. The Tx inspection and licence is soon to expire. She is a student taking classes online and looking for work. She has a tx drivers licensce, and insurance. It is confusing as to what she needs to do first. She needs a Tn DL,insurance, inspection, registration and title. She is not working but plans to,and has no plans to return to Tx. It seems she needs two types of residence identification. She has no rental contract,no utility bills,no Tn bank act.The landlady could give her a rental statement but still lack second identification.I guess since she is a student she could keep Tx registration, but to drive back to Tx to get inspection is not practical and when she finds a job that is out.I thought about buying her a differnt auto and bring the Tacoma home but she would need a Tn DL I want to get thatvehicle out of my name, and would sign the title over to her.I need to do this by the end of the month. Anybody knowlegeable about Tn. requirements...........thanks

Usually it is just two types of ID not residence ID. People move to Tenn. all of the time and don't have to prove residence. She just has to prove who she is. Her old drivers license and her SS card would be all she needs. If she has a little time a Passport works as excellent ID.

As for the car she just needs to check with the county she is currently living in. They have different rules in different counties in Tenn. Since it is family transfer there is a sales tax exception for that.

If she is just taking on-line classes and looking for work she has the time to do the leg work. She just needs to go down to the county offices in the county she is living in. I bet that she can get the info in less than 2-3 hours. She just needs to work on it like it is job.

It can not be that hard thousands of illegal Mexicans do it every day. Cars and drivers license without a legal SS number. So your daughter should be able to do it herself.

JDS"s 3rd paragraph would be the trick.Go to the place where they deal with these things.
That way, no bum steers.

Simplest thing short term is to renew the Texas plates and scrape off the expired inspection sticker. But if she isn't planning on returning to Texas, she should work on changing her residency and get on with it. The sooner she does the sooner she will qualify for in-state Tennessee tuition. And if she gets a job she'll need to file a Tennessee income tax return.

My mother recently quit driving because of her age and gave me her car. She lives in Illinois and I live in Texas. I went to the Illinois license place when I picked up the car and asked them about the title transfer and they told me all she had to do is sign the title over to me. Then when I got to Texas I found out Texas has a lot of screws loose. They required a separate transfer of title form which my mother had to fill out and sign. In my mothers condition I couldn't send her a complicated form to fill out and sign so I had to wait 6 months until I could get to Illinois to get the form filled out. If it were me since you are under the gun to take care of the registration I would go to the Texas license office first and find out the protocol of a outgoing vehicle. Then I would have your daughter do the same thing in Tennessee. You can also expect for her to have to pay sales tax on the value of the vehicle. Usually its better to sell her the vehicle for a dollar. From what I understand if its a gift, they tax it more.

I would search the laws in both states try txdot.gov and tndot.gov...

I don't think the title will need to be changed to get a required inspection... Are that's how it works here unless were she lives will be her permanent residents...

nc laws for what its worth

15. My vehicle is due for inspection, but I will be out of the state. What do I do?
A person who is out of state may obtain an emissions inspection in the jurisdiction
where the vehicle is located in lieu of an inspection in North Carolina as long as it meets
the requirements of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (40 C.F.R 51).

Are see what it takes to get a waiver from TX... I would think even with a waiver it must be inspected if a inspection is required in the state were its operated now...

If she were in NC all it would require is a NC state inspection to satisfy NC I would present that to TX and go from their....

She needs nothing.. Just take the curent Texas regeristration and a good address. Walk into any county court office ant tell them she wants to register the car and get a titel. At most they will ask for a bill of sale from you but most will not. Shuld be no problem. They do not ask for any proof of identification. Tennesse is very easy to deal with on auto regeristration.
They might try and collect sales tax on the current value of the auto but if she has a statement that you gave it to her will be no sales tax.

Family to family transfer should have no sales tax in TN. Like previous poster said, TN is easy to deal with, overall, in dealing with auto registration.

We lived in Rural Tennessee, it was the easiest place I've ever
been to get tags and a driver's license (Oklahoma was 2nd). Went
to title and tag a pickup I bought in Michigan in Tennessee.
Arranged to start work late and went to our county courthouse,
the County Clerk's office opened at 8:00 AM at 8:03 I was
walking out with my tags (they started waiting on me at 7:55)
Same when we initially moved there in-15 minutes or less we had
titles and tags for both cars, a short drive to the DL office
and 1/2 hour later we had Driver's licenses. IIRC in Nashville
she might need an emissions test, go get the tail pipe sniffed
and carry the paperwork to the tag office with a signed title
and she should be good, in the big city they might make her get
a TN driver's license first.

You can do a search for the closest TN DMV where she's attending school. They have lot of them and give them a call. I'm not sure if they will accept the title unless you sign it in front of them. Every state is different. If they will accept it she may be able to make the transfer herself at the DMV. Time is getting close to the end of Oct. I would call them today. It may save you a trip to TN. hal

Title is probably easiest. Just fill out a Limited Power Of Attorney letter giving her authority to sigh over the title. Then she can take care of it herself. She should get the drivers license, etc. first so she can register in TN. DMV can tell her what ID she needs but the landlady's statement and something like a library card are probably enough.
