I'm in Southern Illinois, and the old timers always said the 10th of August was the day to plant turnips. That's two months before our average frost date of October 10. Don't know if that "two months before frost" would work in other climates though.

In West TN. If you want turnips plant Aug 15 - Aug 20th. If you want turnips plant very thin. I plant in a thin row. If you plant thick you will have plants but not much in the way of turnips below.

Central NC If I want a turnip plant by aug 15th... Their is a down side to early planting you will have to keep them sprayed for lice... If I want till mid/late sept I may not have to spray'em but will not produce much of a turnip...

I planted these turnips the first week of September in southern Missouri. They are the size of a marble now. I got a late start on them due to the drought we had this year. Last year they were the size of a softball by the 1st of November.
