farmall year model

i recently bought a farmall H that had been takin apart for some time. it was all there except for the bolster plug so i made out i guess. the serial number tag has been gone for a long time and trying to figure out how to tell the year of the tractor. i was told it is a 1939 year model but i dont know how to tell though. any help would be appreciated.

i had a M long ago and i'm thinking it had the yr cast on the rear of the front spindle, down between the tires. someone on here will know if that is true or not. and what is a bolster plug?

The 39's had a different transmission cover and most of them I've seen have different wheels. Seats are usually the old style. Look for numbers on castings, sometimes they give you a date if you find them post them here. If it has rubber rear tires there is a date on the inside of the rim if the rim hasn't rusted out or been changed in the last 70 years. Post pictures, some of the Gurus here can point out other features to ID the year. The Farmalls are harder to date than say a John Deere B as the B changed several times over about the same production run as the H

There are a few ways. One is to look for the serial tag on the left side of the clutch housing, or look for the serial on the right side of the engine block near the top. All major castings had a code on them, like 5*2*Y would be May 2, 1953. I can't think what '39 was as they skipped a few letters but you can look it up in the archives on the farmall forum.

My H has the tractor serial number stamped into the engine block on a flat, on the right side, a couple of inches below the No. 1 spark plug.

H tarctors with original engines have the same engine and chassis serial numbers. Some 39 models had the serial number stamped on the frame rail.
