I had a 500 pound bull calf laying up along the fence yesterday morning. Once in a while he'd be up,then back down again. I rode the 4 wheeler up there after dinner, tried to walk him and he kind of staggered. They've been on creep feed since July, but after I filled it Sunday,it was completely empty already Monday morning. I think even though they'd been on it for 3 months,he got in there and over did it. I sold a thin cow last Thursday and I'm thinking now it might have been his mother, and he just stood in there eating for lack of anybody to wander off with. He was still up there in the same place this morning, but before I had chores done,he came up and was acting OK,licking the TM block. Don't often see'em recover from acidosis, but looks like he did. |

| I found a 500# dead calf at the edge of my pond. I think he may have had blackleg as I haven't vacinated yet. Roy |

| isn't blackleg the one where you can tell that's what they died from by pressing on the carcass and hear the popping sounds caused by trapped gases? or something like that? |

| I believe you are right. I took a carcass to the vet and he cut a piece of the hide and it had tiny bubbles under the skin. He said the calf died from blackleg. Roy |

| hard to top the aggravation and helpless feelings you get out of finding dead livestock. if i could, i would shoot blackleg right between the eyes, but i sure wouldn't trap him by the leg. forgive me roy, sometimes i can't help myself. good luck with your herd. |

| this is maybe a dumb question, but if you did see a calf die, would you butcher it right away ,especially if it died from something like overeating ? |

| | I asked an ag agent that question once and the reply was: "Why on earth would you want to eat a diseased animal". I guess when they die it has to be via a disease. Seemed to me like a tremendous waste buttttt. Mark |

| Not one like that,no. Had a Holstein heifer got hit by a car one time,we ate her. Several older Holstein cows got ground in to burger when they died from things like heart attacks, prolapse uterus, things like that. |

| RRLund, you don't push the uterus back in place and lace it up with shoestring? |

| Yep,all homegrown. Wouldn't cost me anymore at $8 corn than it would if corn was $2 right now. The expense was in planting it. |

| Its still costing you $8 as you could sell the corn rather than feed it,the calf is still eating $8 corn but you won't get near $8 for your corn crop when you sell the calf. |

| | "liquidate your herd everyone and wait for 2 dollar corn" That's a great idea! Everyone else sell out your herds and when livestock prices come up I'll make the killing. |

| Glad to hear he made it ok - sure hate to lose any. I lost a nice momma a few years back who was two months away from delivering. Lost both her and the calf. Her stomach got twisted - did everything we could short of surgey. Felt that in the pocketbook and the table. |
