Still got about 30 acres to go.These are small
fields of about 2 to 6 acres-odd shaped at
that.Second cut grass with a 'touch' of alfalfa. If
the weather holds this will be the best hay of the
season.I'm ready to be 'done'.Steve

Got my 5th cutting of alfalfa to cut yet and some waterways that have enough regrowth to cut again...If we can get enough dry days in a row to get it up. Working on beans now. Running around 40-45 bpa 12% and green stems. Looks like silage coming out the back of the combine.

The guy who leases the home place from us just cut the 6th cutting. That's right, 6 cuttings (alfafa) this year in and around Rocky Ford/LaJunta Colorado area. Everything is irrigated. Got water yesterday going over our wheat field I planted 2 weeks ago (4 inches high) and over the pastures. Topping off the pond with the run off tonight.

Gonna try for second crop, got first cut done second week of may. Didn't get any rain after that, only grew back about 4 inches. Mid Mo got real dry along with a lot of other States. Even had guys trying to pass CRP hay as second cut brome, sad what people will do to try and make a buck.

Finished for the season with 3rd cut grass on Tuesday, round baled and wrapped, 5 bales per acre this time...18 the first cut and 10 on the 2nd, cold and wet here this year, so growing was slow. had to use the old tractor as the others were busy behind the combine and hedgecutting..... Today we had 2 inches of the wet stuff... ground is totally waterlogged, tractor work may be finished for this year!

Not trying to cut anything anymore, but the 5th crop looks tall enough I might suggest to Dad that he starts green chopping it. Looks pretty good for this late in the year.

I'm a little south of you in northern NM. Baling the last 30 acres today. Making small squares to sell over the winter. (I hope) Hopefully pick it up Saturday and be finished.

They usually get 7-8 cuttings here on irrigated land in this part of AZ, but I heard that with the extreme heat that we had this summer they were only going to get 5-6 cuttings.

Sure not me,but there was a custom operator cutting some horse hay yesterday right along where I was picking corn. Don't know if the owner even knew he was cutting. Temps are mid 50s,supposed to rain all weekend. Wouldn't think a horsey guy would appreciate that.

I prolly could make more second cutting, and definitely mulch hay, my friend called me 2 weeks ago looking for more mulch but the weather has not worked in my favor. I'm most likely done for this year! Last year columbus day it was 70 degrees and dry, this year 50 degrees and rainy, and damp!

I'm thinking about trying to put some hay down next week if it stops raining long enough. The weather guessers are saying rain for the next 4 or 5 days. I know if I can bale 5 bales of hay I could sell 20. This area is hurting for hay so figure if all I get is 5 bales it is sure better then no bales

South central MO here, have a rented place to put down yet. Waiting on the weather as they are calling for rain this weekend, hopefully cut in the next week or so. We realy need to get more hay up due to the drought.

Got a couple hundred acres on the ground, and a couple hundred still to cut. Probably be stacking bales on Thanksgiving again this year... I just hope I'm done before the first of the year. Don't want to drag it out too long, ya know.

Got 4 acres down, hope to roll today. Rain coming tomorrow but the grass is drying slooow...

Tell me about wrapped bales of grass. I have a 605H twine baler. How do you wrap them (by hand hopefully) and how do they cure, what can you feed?

I have a Vermeer wrapper, actualy built by McHale. Individualy wrapped, still wet and makes silage out of it. If you are just trying to make a few they make bags (like a large garbage bag) that you can slip over a bale, get as as much air out as possible, (some people use a shop vac) and tie off.
