Do You Play an Instrument?

I collect/am interested in everything! Tonight I bought a 3.5-year-old, never been played mandolin off Craigs List. I AM going to play in a bluegrass band someday! I love music, but don't yet play an instrument.

Does the radio count? I had a 4 string banjo, got it for Christmas quite a few years ago,but didn't have the sticktoitivness to learn. Wish I'd have kept playing around with it.

I play guitar and banjo, and I can play a fiddle to some degree. Got a dobro in the spring and have been having all kinds of fun with that, but still have a long way to go. I have an accordion that I mess around with but I never learned to do more than play the melody and push the chord buttons, maybe someday. I build banjos and fiddles in my free time, and have built one mandolin but have not learned to lay it. 55 50 Ron builds really nice violins, he is on this site fairly often.

About 5 years ago I picked up the 5 string banjo and have learned to "play" a little and go to a lot of bluegrass jams and can take a decent break on a straight bluegrsss song, but having started at my age I will NEVER be anywhere near a real banjo player grrrrrrrrr I couldnt pack water to any real picker.....

This was something I took in my RV 2 years ago, its pretty badddddddd but Ive improved a bit since then.......

I play 5 string oldtime (clawhammer)banjo and have recently been playing the trumpet again to help my son who joined band at school.

Go to your local music shop and get you a book on the mandolin and teach yourself. I did with the guitar a year ago and now I play gospel bluegrass every Sunday morning at my church with a few other people (banjo, dobro, fiddle, and another guitar) and am having a blast, you won't regret it!

Don't play much any more, but in middle school,I played the transistor radio nearly day [if I had battries!!]

Yes, my oldest brother and I have been playing old country and blue grass since I was around eight or nine. Big brother there in the pic is 15 1/2 years older than me, and started to teach me as soon as he could get me to sit still. He is way more devoted to music than myself, and takes in some bluegrass festivals in states PA and WI each year. We had a jam last week, and take turns with the fiddle and guitar, and sometimes mandolin. Great fun for us, and made a bond between oldest and youngest in a faimly of 5 that just isn't there with the rest. Big bro is now 66, and goes out to play 2-3 times a week for seniors and the like, just for fun. Bruce

Played the Cornet in HS, never really liked it! Now I play my ear drum, the shoe horn, and sing on a hill far away! LOL

I play the tuba and I own 9 of the beasts. I started in 8th grade in the spring of 1961 and got my first college degree in Music Education.

Played drums in many honor bands during high school. Got accepted to the McDonalds All American band to march in the Mace"s Thanksgiving day Parade. Problem was practice was in New York during haying season and dad needed me to help. You also had to pay your way to NY. Wish I would have went now.

Played in a country band for 5 years in the 80"s. When they got to playing 3 nights a week I left the band.

I would love to play a couple of times a month but every band wants to play more.

I have played a few sets with a couple of bands the last few years.

Drums are very hard to carry a tune on by yourself.

Does this count? Hit it at the right tempo it kinda sounds like a 2 banger idling...

I play trumpet too, since 5th grade. I guess I'm in 16th grade now.

Kevin,
I really like listening to music with a dulcimer in the band.

I play guitar and harmonica, sometimes simultaneously. At 71 I am now attempting to learn piano (by ear). Before I get old I hope to also learn banjo and mandolin.

(quoted from post at 23:02:20 10/10/12) I used to play a shoe horn in a hat band....
I was going to tell you I found this to be hilarious, but I didn't want you to get a big head! ;)

Yes.
Probably am best at acoustic guitar.
Also play acoustic/electric bass.
Know some tunes on piano accordion.
After about 35 years of trying, I can play some reasonably sounding tunes on pedal steel guitar.
As Zachary Hoyt said (thanks for the mention Zach), I and a friend build violins and I started to learn to play them about 12 years ago. Can play slow tunes, but doubt I will ever be a fiddler on fast tunes. As John T. said "started too late in life". :)
Can play some slow tunes on mandolin.
Own a dobro but haven't really tried to learn to play it.
Play in a 6 piece music group that entertains in nursing homes, churches and a few other places. Our group has 2 fiddles, banjo, guitar, electric/acoustic bass, and harmonica.
I posted a video of "Silent Night" on pedal steel guitar a few years ago, but have no idea of how to find it now. (sigh)
Currently am repairing a piano accordion - wow what a job!! (see photo)
I own at least one of each instrument mentioned.
To keep this tractor related, I will mention that I do tractor electrical repair for friends and contribute to questions here occasionally.

Does this count as an instrument? I played at my old friend's daughter's wedding...The gateway behind was so I could make a quick getaway if they didn't like it!

I play saxophone and 5 string banjo, also have a dobro but don't play it much. Bluegrass is addicting, I love that banjo.
