Hy-Tran fluid vs. TSC Traveller

Time to replace my hydraulic and xmsion fluids.

I'm considering using TSC's Traveller instead of CIH's Hy-Tran fluid, but I'm not comfortable about it. One big consideration is that my closest CIH dealer is about 35-40 miles away whereas I have a TSC store here in town only 7 miles away.

Does anybody have any experience - Good or Bad with TSC's Traveller fluid ?

I'd really like to know !

What are you putting this fluid in? I put traveller in my MF tractors 1135, 1105, 180"s but I will not put anything but hytran in my 1660 CIH combine. In my opinion if you are putting this fluid in anything of value that doesn't leak like a sieve you should put hytran in it.

If the tractor or machine you are putting the fluid in is either Hydro such as a combine or has a wet clutch, save your money and put the expensive fluid in. I don't skimp on the expensive tractors. My skidloader gets the cheap fluid.

One of the major oil companys probably make the oil for them. If you went with Mobil, Phillips, Shell, Chevron or BP you would be getting the same quailty oil. They at least have a R&D that you can call to get information.

right or wrong in know people on both sides on this, i deal with cutting lubes, drawing lubes etc for our company, i have a good friend that was the pres for a large chemical company. you would be surprised if you knew how many compounds are only suppled 1 or 2 companys and they are just renamed and sold. as long as it say it meets the spec for that brand you should be ok. i have used store brand stuff for years as long as it says it meets specs for the pc of eqpt. i have used in my mf 750 combine, cih 1680 and all my ih and case tractors and not had anything happen due to the fluided be used in them, however i do change filter in everything each year no matter what the hours. just my 2 cents.

You did not tell us what you where going to use the hydraulic fluid in. It makes a big difference. If it is an older IH tractor without a hydraulic TA than the TSC fluid should be fine. IF it is a year old CIH 305 MFWD tractor then I would say go get the CIH HY-Tran.

It is the saving verses the value of the equipment you are putting it into. I saw cheap TSC hydraulic oil cost some guys the clutch packs in their Powershift JD tractors here 5-10 years ago. The oil stated right on the container that it was not for any hydraulic clutches. The problem was this was in small print on the back of the jug. The front said it was JD 303 equivalent. So I guess if you had a JD 4010 with a Synco range transmission then it should work fine but the same oil in a JD 4455 with a 15 speed power shift cost the guy about $5500 when the PS went out.

Myself I don't have things that leak. So I put the better oil in. I think it does have better water resistance and additives. The saving between the cheap oil and good oil would not worth very much each year to me.

What do your tractor op manuals say ?? See what IH spec is required. The IH hytran spec of 30 years ago was B-6, todays hytran has a MS 1209 spec. If the specs printed on the TSC fluid jug does not meet one or either IH spec, then you better not use it in place of hytran.

I buy mine from a local parts jobber (mom and pop auto and tractor parts sales). It comes in yellow plastic pails and clearly states on the container if it includes wet brakes, clutches, trannys and differentials. Then there are the specs for the different equipment brands on the back. I have never had a problem with this fluid, but it is NOT straight hydraulic fluid; it is multi-purpose and says so.
