Massey 35 gas sitting out side for over a year now!never started in that time as the steering shaft and bearing block had to be replaced.Tried to start it today.I have fire to the points,gas runs out of the carb,I had to tap it so the needle would seat to stop the gas leaking through the breather connection.
It turns over ok but not a kick.

Is the tractor flooded? I am not much of a mechanic so need a little advice,Thanks Ron

Pull off a plug wire and see if there's fire to your sparkplugs. Is this a mag or distributor?
Rub the points until shiny using some 320 wet or dry. If you have fire to your plugs hold your hand over the throat of the carburetor while a helper makes an attempt to start the engine. Should have good suction on your hand. If there's not much suction means you have low intake manifold vacuum. I would also do a compression check. Hal

Fire as in power to the points means nothing if the points are corroded from sitting that long. #1 make sure you have spark at the center wire of the cap. Needs to be a blue/white color and jump a 1/4 inch gap. If no spark there take the cap rotor and dust cover off and carefully open and close the points by hand. If you can both hear and see spark there but did not have spark from the coil wire the cap or rotor is bad is no spark at the point then the points need cleaned or replaced

Is it possible some of the valves are stuck? -just a thought.

How old is the gas? Today's gas isn't what it used to be and it can go off really quickly. If all the other easy things seem to be OK then I'd try draining the tank and putting a little fresh gas in. Sam

At the time that tractor was made I think all companys had quit making mag's. And Doughtfull Massey Ferguson ever used a mag. Ferguson here in the states never did and I cannot think of any model Massey Harris other than possibly the Challanger of the 30's that had a mag.

Squirt a teaspoon of oil in each cylinder through each sparkplug hole and turn the engine over a few revolutions to seal the rings to the cylinders.This will raise compression and increase vacume to help in starting. This along with the other suggestions should get you started.
