I recently bought a used JD 301AG tractor and having some problems with the hydraulics. The "G" stands for gasoline and the engine seems to be okay. The 3 point hitch is not working properly but we think the pump is okay. We've changed the oil and filter and cleaned a strainer on top of the pump. The level is showing high so we drained some oil out but no help. Is there any kind of control valve or another strainer that needs to be checked or adjusted? |

| If the 301 is similar to a 2040, there is a cylinder screen in the bottom of the tractor. There should be two plugs on either side that a 1/2 drive ratchet should fit into. The screen is between the plugs. |

| | Put a 3000 PSI gauge into the pump's test port. See what the pressure is when not trying to use the hitch and then WHEN using the hitch. If you've got over 2000 PSI in both tests - your problem is in the hitch linkage. 301A is the industrial version of the 1020 ag tractor. I assume you've got the three-cylinder 135 cubic inch engine and the small German hydraulic pump. |

| The 301A would likely be similar to a 30 series tractor given it's a gasser but.......Who knows as Dubuque and Mannheim mixed and matched a lot of parts. Guessing a gasser 2030 would be close to similar? |

| Measure the transmission oil system pressure, should be 150-165 when a pack is applied. Is there a high-low shift or a reverser? The seals can fail in them after a few decades of service. Or could be cracked lines, failed fitting or a stuck valve inside the transmission. Front pump rarely fails unless exposed to dirty oil. |
