ot washing machine

My wife uses this washer to clean my dirty clothes from working on the tractor so here the question. It won't spin dry the clothes. With nothing in it at all, it spins veeerrryyy slowly. Belt is not slipping, sounds like it wants to go but can't - time to replace?

Sounds like the tranny died. Probably time to look for one on craigslist. No point in wasting good money on a new one.

that would be the 2nd tranny in about 14 years. Maytag ain't what they used to be. Last time the tranny went out is was a horrendous squeel and knocking. It was less than 10 years old so they gave me a new one - but not it is out of warranty.

That figures out to about 2.21 cents per load. I wouldn't have one of those junkie things, LOL. Fourteen years ain't bad.

Is it at top or front loader, Neptune or Atlantis?

Is the water being comletely discharged so that the inner basket is free to spin? Maybe the pump is not completely discharging the water from between the drums. Is the pump belt snug enough?

Does it run slow in both the wash and the spin cycles?

Does the brake release when the inner basket is trying to spin. A common problem on this type of machine is the transmission drive pulley and thrust bearing kit. If the pulley ramps have worn down or the thrust bearing has worn out, the brake won't be releasing all the way causing the brake to drag and not letting it get up to full spin speed.

Is there any clothing trapped between the inner and outer tubs.

Check that the motor slides back and forth real easy and smooth, clean the motor plate and nylon slide and put a light coat of oil on the plate where the nylon slide rides, make sure the motor tension spring is still in place.

It could be a be a problem with the transmission leaking oil. The shaft seal on the transmission could leak oil and it could get on the clutch. The clutch pads that are supposed to grab and turn the tub could be covered with oil. When the clutch pads get oil on them it makes the clutch slip too much and you never achieve full spin speed. Any sign of oil leaks under the machine?

If it is the machine Vern is describing, the pulley is forty bucks, the mating ramp-like clutch is about ten, and takes about two hours to put in. The job looks worse than it really is. It would be sort of wonderful if you could set it up on a bench a foot or so off the ground. Look at the driven pulley while it's trying to spin. If it's running off the end of the ramps, those are the two pieces you need.

Seems its life expectancy has expired, help the Chinese economy and get another machine. Is it worth the fa^ting around?.

If the washer has the extra rinse setting, try it on there and let it cycle all the way through and see if this helps. Mine won't spin out worth a dern on the regular setting, but if I put on the extra rinse it works fine. I have just left it there for several years. Yeah, that uses extra water and electricity, so if it was used very much I would fix it. Also another excuse for not fixing it is where it is-it is hell to get out of where it is wedged in. If that ain't enough, I have other excuses too!

I got my mother's dryer in pieces all over her laundry room floor. Started making a real racket, she said just go buy a new one. I said not until I figure out what's wrong. 20 minutes later I had a plastic drum type fan in my hand with a egg-shaped hub, $17.90 online + $7.00 shipping. Even if she only gets another year out if it for $25.00 and some of my time I figure it's worth it. But it's an older one so I figure chances are good it will now outlast what would have replaced it anyway...

i'd fix it and keep it

similar problem happened to ours last year 20 buck or so in parts and its good for another few years

a new washer is expensive an a lot more expensive to fix with all the electronic control boards.
