International 1086 Hydraulic Problems

I have an International 1086 and having problems with the hydraulics. I mainly use it for cutting hay using a 10ft Kuhn mower. I have had the tractor for about 6 years and had very few problems. This past spring I took it to the local case dealer for some work and they told me to use Case Hy-Trans fluid for the hydraulics. I had been using the general fluids from Tractor Supply or the local automotive store. Well since I started using the Case fluid, the hydraulics are not working very well. This summer it started with having to raise the rpms to 540 to lift the three point. Now we are at the point that I have to alternate very quickly between the three point and the remote valve to raise the mower to travel position. Last week the steering started becoming hard to turn, acting as if it was low on fluid. The TA is also slow to engage and has never been slow before. I have a few leaks on the tractor and the mower cylinder leaks some so through out the summer we have been replacing the fluid in the tractor. Anyone else experienced these issues and could it be my fluid? Should I change back to the generic fluid?

I am running Hy-tran in it now. I was wondering if I could change back to generic brands and maybe stop the problems?

The foluid recommended is correct, and has had no service issues. The generic fluid (if it meets Hytran spec) is probably OK, and probably not the issue. A simple fix that might be advantagous is to over fill the system by 5 gallons. it hurts nothing, and if it cures ills, well worth the effort. If some elements get better, and others do not., Or if it is making gear grinding noises, it may be the tubular drive shaft at the clutch PP that is beginning to fail. If still no joy, a flow rater, and specifications will be next in the process. Jim

Have you replaced your hydraulic filter? The 1086 has a relatively small filter that needs regular attention. The problems you listed would not be caused by generic versus Hytran fluid. The Hytan might actually be cleaning things better causing your filter too plug.

You have a hydraulic system problem not a hydraulic oil issue. Like some one else posted I would start with the hydraulic oil filter. Then if you still have issues than get some one to look at it that is good on IH systems. I really think you have something leaking or a pump going out. I would not run it very long this way. You stated that the TA is engaging slowly. You can tear it out real easily. Making the repair just cost much more money.

The 1086 has 2 hydraulic pumps. The rear one supply's the three point and rear hydraulic outlets. The front one, behind the MCV, powers the steering, brakes and TA. They both draw their oil from the one filter. I would recheck your filter because it is the easiest to do. If you have something failing in the transmission the filter can fill with metal filings and plug is short order. If all is well there your going to have to have someone with gauges and a flowrater check pressures and diagnose the system. Usually only one pump will fail and not both at once but I guess anything is possible.

Well here it all depends on if it is and early 1086 or if it is a later one . If it is and early one it has basically the same system as a 1066 , but if it is a later one then it has the PFC hyd system . and on that system i am by no means the expert. First things first Change the hyd. filter with a new O/ring look at the fluid also check the filter area for SPARE PIECES AND PARTS that should not be there. IF the filter change does not make any improvement then it is time to take it in and have the system checked and flow rated . If it is the PFC system then Pete or Owen are far better at them then me . I do not have the extra piece for my flow rater to do the proper testing on that system and i shy away from them .
