It's electric start and shaft drive. I used it like a tractor pulling trailers cutting wood in areas to small for the big tractor. Loved it until the engine seized. Mine is one of the last ones , an 86 model. 15,000 km and still running the original rear tires. It is geared pretty low which is good for checking fence lines and crops or pulling a heavy load. I don't usually run mine over 65 k/per hour on the roads. Good on gas and doesn't use oil . They have a nice ride. I have replaced the tires 3 times, I also have 2011 model 420 four wheeler. The big Red is a better built machine and LOTS of more fun to ride, Snoother, Easier ride, quiter, and more manueverable.
