Locust posts??

Unbelievable....... Only locust trees I've seen since I've been here were in people's yards..... Neighbor kid works at a vineyard/winery and they use locust for posts... All are sawed and 3x3 inch. Don't beat me up here, but if I strapped/lagged 4 together to make 6 inch posts for corners and a gate, would they last just as good? Maybe paint the surfaces that'll be touching with roof tar first?? Or would it just be a waste of time? Price is right (free).....

Thanks.

locust makes good posts, folks around here all had locust groves at one time, that they would cut every few years.. i dont know why you couldnt put some together, but my concern would be if the bolts would cost more than you could buy say eight or ten inch treated posts for.are all these posts straight 3x3? get a truck load build your sheds out of them by building like a log cabin, and youd have one that outlasted most of us here.would take a truck load myself if you were anywhere close.

Hello Dave2.
Locust will outlast cedar. Use them any way you can, and coat the part that goes into the ground as an extra protection.
Guido.

Have lots of black locust trees on my farm. Make great posts and lots of other things. My front porch is black locust boards and have been down 34 years. Most of the sills and floor joists in our house are locust. Very durable and extremely strong. The only problem is when building, you often have to oil the nails or in my case, 80d spikes to drive them.
It is also kinda hard to saw on my sawmill. In the early 80's, I cut and split 3300 posts and sold them.

Dave2,
These rails are 25 years old, some have been resting on the ground. Hope the concrete posts last longer.

I have a few locust in the ground for over 50 years. Some only last a few. The old ones are sawed heartwood. Others I split and probably had more sap wood. But, they are priced right, meaning free. And when they break off, fire wood is next.

I worked for a guy that told me to debark them and they would last forever. I don t know about forever but I saw some I had put in the ground when I was at his estate sale, and they looked good. I worked there in 1973.

If they are nice and straight, glue them together with the foaming
Gorilla glue, and clamp tightly. Pre-drill hardware holes and put a
shingle, or metal cap on top, to keep the water running off, and
they'll outlast you!

George Marsh,

Not to swipe Dave2's post...

But whenever you post pics of that fence - I just think it is the most beautiful split-rail I have ever seen! Again, great job on the concrete posts.
