We want to make snaplage and have a 244 head off our 300 picker. If we find a screen and an adapter plate will it work on a 3940? I am afraid that the tongue is to short and that when turning a snoot will go thru a rear tractor tire. The 3960 and 3970 harvesters have a longer tongue that would give more clearence.Does anyone have a adapter plate for sale in the midwest?(Iowa,Ill,MN or WI)

If your custom guy still has his adapter plate and just went to a narrow row head. You maybe better off just to buy a JD 444 for him to use on his chopper. You can find high tin JD 444s for under $1000. You will probily have to give more than that for the adpter plate for your chopper.

Your head will work if you have the long tongue. It was an option on the JD 3940. Then you will need the adapter drive plate. Feed roll spacers. Re-cutter screen mounting and screen. Feed roll slot covers. Belly pan for under the feed rolls.

The used to be a whole good bundle with all the parts to do it. I think I have the list some where. The hard part is the adapter plate and drive. They are kind of hard to find.

Call Schmitt Imp. Holy Cross Iowa. 563-552-1005 They used to be a JD dealer. They had several adapter plates several years ago. There is a guy that works there Mark Hermsen. He is good about knowing what all you will need.

Probably not as well as a 243.

The literature for the 3940 shows just a 1 row. I believe most other 2 row regular silage harvesters from that era would accept a 2 row snapper head. I can't prove it but if you could adapt a 2 row it would work. The 3960 shows up to three rows and I know the cutter head is not that much larger than the 3940.

The cutterhead does not concern me as much as is my tongue long enough to be able to turn without a corn head snoot going thru a rear tractor tire when turning to the right. Two local Deere dealers do not know and I hate to put money into something that I can't use.The custom operater who did mine last year just told me he sold his 444 corn head that he used on his 5400 self propelled.I wish he would have told me a couple of months ago so I would have more time to get something together.Last fall when finished he asked me if I would want a bag again this year and I said yes, now the corn is almost ready and I stopped to talk to him this morning and he tells me he sold the head late last fall.
