Road from Hither to Yon goes over a mountain. One mile up and one mile down the other side. If you average 30 mph going up the mountain how fast do you have to go down the other side to average 60 mph from Hither to Yon?

To make the two mile trip and average 60 mph you have to do it in two minutes (1 mile per minute or 60 MPH).
If you already burned up the two minutes it would take to average 60mph on the 2 mile journey; by averaging 30mph (1 mile every 2 minutes) up the mountian there is no time left to go down the other side.

At least that is how it looks to me at this moment in time.

I guess I just don't get it; here is what I come up with: (assuming 90 mph on the downhill is correct per the poster)
First Mile average 30 mph = 2 minutes of travel time
Second mile average 90 mph = .6667 minutes (40 seconds) of travel time
Total time in transit = 2.6667 minutes (2 Minutes 40 Seconds)
Average Velocity = distance / time
2/2.6667=0.7499 miles per minute x 60minutes = 44.994 mph
I estimate that in order to get the average to 60 miles per hour he would need to drive an additional 2 miles at 90 mph. so 1 mile at 30 mph + 3 miles at 90 mph would net you a 60 mph average but you would have gone 2 miles further than you had to. Bypass Yon by 1 mile and very quickly (instantly)turn around and go back to Yon and then you will have averaged 60 mph but it will take you 4 minutes to do it.
