Now here is a scam that I never heard of. I am not totaly sure how they intend to pull it off.
I have an ad for a large piece of woodworking equptment for sale . It is from my late Aunts estate, as part of her second husbands estate (year and a half+, not settled yet) I got a nice e-mail from someone who said they were interested, but wanted the serial number. I obliged. Now I got a (lot) less nice e-mail saying that it was theirs, stolen about a year ago (I know this is not true as I have a video inventory I took of my aunts second husbands household contents from jan 2011 clearly showing the equptment). They say they have searched my e-mail address and are on their way WITH THE PAPERWORK, to pick it up. If I do not co-operate, I will get a free ride in a squad car to the county lockup and charges pressed. If they really do show up, I intend to dial 911, and I have a 12 gadge loaded.

Best not to give them the note that the constabulary will be just around the block in several unmarked vehicles. That way the aliment of surprise is yours. Invite them over; be set the trap several days PLUS before at a SECURED place // not your own that way IF THEY suspect they won't be able to return when your least expect &&"" wipe you out""
ALWAYS KEEP THE ADVANTAGE IN YOUR HANDS //MANY EYES: EARS: NOSES: OF FRIENDS & NEIGHBOURS are a marvelous security system.
Wm.

Yep, they been trying that scam for a long time, never, give them the complete serial number. They tried to do the same thing to me 10 years ago.

I had almost the same thing tried on me years ago with 2 used tractor tires. left at a tire shop for sale. They must have stopped and got the numbers off of them, then tried to scam the dealer into giving them to them. I had bought the tires with a tractor many years before and had no proof. We just waited them out. A tough one to handle. Glad the dealer trusted me.
I think I would just make a date with them and have the police waiting.

Write them back and tell them that if they prove it is theirs, to come out at a scheduled time. They only need to pay you a "storage" fee, "handling" fee, and "recovery" fee in order to leave with "their" machine. These amounts should be equal to or more than what you wanted for the machine.
Oh, you only take cash and there will be law enforcement on site to protect both parties.
You will NEVER hear from them again, at least not until they come up with another scam.

Gotta give em an A for creativity tho..... I'd just report it as internet harrassment and forget it. There address can also be traced even tho they probably haven't done yours... They prolly figger that anyone gullible enough to give em the #'s in the first place would be glad to sign the stuff over and help load it....

Ping 'em back tell them that YOU WANT TO KNOW WHEN THEY WILL BE THERE, DATE AND TIME, tell them it's so you can have the FBI fraud investigation squad you're working with present, might throw out some phrases like "continuing fraud investigation", "sting operation" "Federal Warrants" "receiving stolen property/transport of stolen property across state line" or my favorite "regarding a continuing investigation of a home invasion involving a a murder" or as the previous poster said ask for a certified letter and police report SENT TO YOUR ATTORNEY. I believe in poker the phrase is "raise and call". The important thing is you figured out it's a scam so come back at them have a little fun, the longer you mess with them the less time they have to mess with someone else.

Now that IS a new one! Some of these basx*#ds just sit around trying to think up new ways to scam people. Some place keeps calling my daughter saying they are going to take her to court if she doesn't pay them money that they claim she obtained on one of those payday advancement deals. She checked out the dates that they gave her and she did not even have a bank account at that time! She told them to send her something official in the mail but they haven't done that yet. My son went through the same thing, got to where he recognized the phone number. When they called he answered, "Police department, cyber crime division, Capt. so and so speaking", they quit calling him.

Ask for a certified copy of the police report. End of problem.

Tell them you will only respond to a certified letter. Mail fraud is serious business and chances are you'll never hear from them again.
