My ma made it with raw hamburg and rice. (i thought raw rice too) but its too late to ask. I did it that way maybe once a long time ago. All my wife's cook books say cook meat first. We do but it seems to lack the flavor. Whats the YT experts way?

mom would make it in a roasting pan with a lid. burger, rice and seasoning ,wrap with cabbage. place in a roasting pan, add a couple quarts of home made tomato sauce and bake in the oven.

My late wife would shred the cabbage coarsely and mix it all together and bake it, I guess you would call it casserole style. Saves the time of prepping the cabbage leaves and wrapping them. Dang, now you got me hungry!

My wife browns the burger and seasons it. Cooks the rice and adds stewed tomatoes to the meat. Then she chops the cabbage into noodle-sized pieces. She layers the cabbage, then adds meat mixture, then more cabbage, more mixture, etc. Bake at 350 until done. Tastes just as good but easier to prepare abnd eat.

It sounds like your talking about Pigs in the Blanket, also known as Piggies. My wife makes them the same way that Glennster does. She steams the cabbage leaves first. It makes it easier to wrap the meat .

My Mom used to make a similar dish to Glenster"s when I was a kid back in the 50s.
She called it "pigs in a blanket" and I think sometimes she actually did use pork.
As I recall, to some other people, pigs in a blanket was something totally different but I don" recall what it was.
Anyway, it sure was good!!

Couple people mentioned "pigs in a blanket," around here "pigs in a blanket" consisted of rolling a canned biscuit flat and cutting it in half, and wrapping it around about half a hot dog and baking it in the oven until the bread was done. They are used mostly for party snacks.

My wife makes it once in a while, its called stuffed cabbage. Its a lot of work to make.Armenian women used to pick grape leaves when I was a boy and stuff them with meat. You need toothpicks to hold the wrapper on while cooking.Pigs in a blanket are different item.

made them today. Used raw meat and cooked rice. turned out great! Yeah, and didn't mean to ignite the "name" war. We call em pigs in a blanket, stuffed cabbage, cabbage rolls, etc. The name was not the point of the original post.
