Hey! sweetfeet preserving old iron

Hello Sweetfeet,
I don't know how good is the detail of the picture. But from the center to the left of the handle,no preservative. From the center to the right I sprayed it with WD40. Then I wiped it dry with a paper towel. It still left the surface smooth and shiny. Could this be a way to preserve old iron?. The nice thing about the WD40 you get get it to most surfaces. If you spray it on plastic parts and wipe it, it looks good also. Try it...........................Guido.

Guido,
Thanks, looks like a great idea! Have to ask the boss first though, and come to a consensus... it's only half my tractor. :)

But I know he got grease and oil on it putting that front end back on it - soooo, maybe I can put a bunch of WD40 on the rest!

Diesel works well to. Wipe it on, let it dry and buff off the residue it leaves behind.

oldtanker,

Think I'll see if I can find a hunk of rust, try applying WD40 and diesel to different areas (and label them. Then let it sit out all winter to see what each looks like next spring.

WD40 works pretty good on stuff that's stored inside. But it will not last outside. I'm experimenting with a couple of products.

This is Owatrol oil. time will tell how it holds up.

And here is an H sprayed with Penetrol Flood, It's slower drying but gives about the same look.

I like the grease, oil, dirt covered machinery the best. The clean ones usually take much more wrenching if they"ve sat outside. I went to look at a tractor that had been sitting out for a long time. The seller apologized for the oily condition. I commended him for leaving it oily.

I use old engine oil in hand pump sprayer I bought at auction for $2. It don't take much. Dump a little thinner in it for better spray. Keeps the weeds down and I don't get enough on the ground (gravel) to hurt anything. Did a plow and disk that sit outside, no rust. When I get bored it's time to spray them again. Always have plenty of used oil around the place.

NE Cowman,

If you find something that seems to hold up well over cold winter/hot summer, please post about it.

We plan to keep the Regular rusty - but would also like to protect it if possible. Though we don"t want to put on something that ends up making a mess out of it.
