I have a 1949 TO20 Ferguson tractor. It has been changed from a generator to an Alternator. Does this make it a 12 volt? |

| | Hopefully whatever alternator it is corresponds to the battery voltage and polarity??? If theres no battery as posted below theres a decent chance the alternator is for 12 volts NEGATIVE GROUND as thats the more common, HOWEVER it may be 6 or 12 volts and Pos or Neg ground, we just cant say sitting here..... | Those alternators can even be made Positive ground! |

| Have it tested. Just because an alternator has been installed does not necessarily make it 12 volts. I took a 12 volt alternator and put in a 6 volt regulator. There is no external evidence on the alternator to indicate this. By having it tested at your local parts house will tell right away when it puts out it's regulated voltage. I hope this helps. |

| Eay way to find out. Call around to local parts places. Many have a bench tester and can test the alternator which will both tell you voltage and if it's any good. Most places bench test for free.

| The 10SI alternator can easily be built to handle 6, 12, or 24 volt, either positive or negative ground. |

| Does it have a 6 or 12 volt battery in it ? They do make alternators in 6 and 12 volt. What voltage battery you have in it will tell what system you have in it. |

| Generally yes, but I see Delco SI series, 1 wire alternators converted to 6V in the JC Whitney catalog. You might get a little more info if 6 or 12V from any light bulbs, does it have a 12V coil or has an ignition ballast resistor been installed. The tractor came without a battery I assume ?? |
