Need Advice on Safely Removing an Engine

Hey guys!!

So, Ive got a little project going on. My mom has an older BCS 716 garden tiller with a problematic briggs engine, and tonight I'm trying to remove that so I can put a brand new Honda GX on it instead.

I got the engine itself off, but on the end of the crankshaft is this doohickey that looks like some part of a rocket or a missile and reads "DANGER STRONGLY WOUND SPRINGS DO NOT DISASSEMBLE, SEND COMPLETE ASSEMBLY TO BCS SERVICE"

I've never seen anything like it before.

I don't want to disassemble it, I just want to pull it off and stick it on the new engine.

There looks to be just one bolt holding it to the crankshaft, but Im afraid that bolt also holds it on and if I loosen it, it will fly off and kill someone. How do you safely remove this thing?

Any thoughts/advice? Im hoping this is a self contained unit and that bolt only holds it to the crankshaft, nothing more. What the heck is this thing? Some kind of a slip clutch?

Thanks in advance guys...

if it was me i'dd loosen this lock nut and take the set screw out, see if it will slide off then, if not take the bolt out the end, it might slide off then,

Yeah thats the plan... I got the new engine running and everything ready to go, now Im just sitting here waiting to be able to move it in... Watching this thread like a hawk lol...

Loosen the locknut and remove the set screw and pull it off the engine shaft. Those springs are internal so no worry about them.

I concur, loosen the locknut, and then the set screw, then slide the unit off the shaft. You might have to hook up a gear puller to it. Hope springs internal! (Sorry for the pun, I couldn't resist!)

Agree... remove the set screw. It should only be holding a woodruff key or straight key in place. Unit should slide right off.

that is the clutch assy. The shaft is smooth with a key way. Loosen the nut, then the screw. Work the clutch off the shaft. The clutch has internal springs under tension DO NOT TAKE IT APART

First, are you sure the GX will bolt up. Does it have a tapered crankshaft. Do you know if the Briggs' crank is tapered or straight. You may need an adapter kit and some machine work on the clutch before the GX will bolt up.

Your clutch should come off after you remove the bolt in the center of the crankshaft. However, it may not want to come off and will require a special tool. I've removed one with a 3lb hammer before by smacking it lightly on the side but I don't know if yours is the same as mine.

Best you call Earth Tools in the morning and get some advice. Look them up on the web. They're in KY. If you get lucky and talk to Joel you'll learn everything you need to know in under three minutes. BCS may have some online manuals. Ask Earth Tools how to procure a manual when you call.

(quoted from post at 19:31:05 08/29/12) maybe a driveline shock absorber.

Exactly, it is what allows the BCS to launch itself 6 feet forward when you hit a rock.

I have a 716 too, the Briggs Intek on it has been fine other than some impact damage when it launches itself when contacting a rock. 1 pull starter after winter storage.

Lance, the shaft should be tapered. Remove the lock nut and set screw. The clutch is supposed to slide right off. Mine wouldn't, it was gummed up, pretty good. I had to use a puller, still wasn't easy. Here is a sight for manuals and spec's. Hope it is of some help.
