Just had to order a feed roll for a chopper. Called the local NH dealer- and fell over. They want $1545 from NH for the part. Called a local parts yard up in Pennsyltuck, and they have the new, made right up there, for $265. IH came down, Case fell, and now it looks like NH is headed down the same path. Nobody can afford to repair their equipment, so they won't buy it. Had to replace a wear plate yesterday, and a 2 foot long piece of channel iron from CNH $68, and from the local welding shop, $2.50. Of course, I did have to drill 5 holes in it and paint it....

Just a note to add to a post by Dick2,further
down. In the eary 1900's Allis-Chalmers was one
of the greatest industrial complex's in the
nation, building Giant "Corliss" type steam
engines, with 40 foot flywheels. They built the
turbines at Hoover dam, still running today, and
electric generating plants, and turbines for
nuclear power plants, and heavy duty electric
motors that I still see running today in sawmills
and factorys. Everything was built to a standard
of pride and quality. I read that the big guns
on the Battleships, Missouri, New Jersey,Iowa,
Wisconsin, were turned by Allis-Chalmers, and that
nobody today has lathe's big enough to do it
anymore!
What Happened? What has happened to America ?

Well, they could just say "NLA. Sorry, you're out of luck."

Out of curiosity, what chopper is this?

892. A lot of the parts are the same on many of the NH's, IH's and Case IH choppers. This one is thirty years old and getting tired. But it's all minor stuff from year to year. It doesn't owe me anything....

when you build 95% of the worlds parts ,and no one here can compete with you, they sort of have us by the ying yang. the really sad thing is that even if you wanted to build parts here, its getting harder and harder to do it.to build a facility to even make one tenth the parts they do there would put a company so far in debt by the time they followed all the rules and regulations it would not be a paying proposition for 50 years if ever. add in the fact that if it were $1 higher you couldnt sell it, and its that much harder. sad thing really,

As I've said before, whenever a European company takes over an American company, they find a way to run them into the ground.

Examples: Mercedes Benz & Chrysler
Deutz & Allis Chalmers
Mercees Benz and Freightliner & Sterling trucks
Fiat & Allis chalmers Construction Eauipment.

Just wait; they'll bail somewhere in the future.

Whoa! Wait a second there skippy......Mercedes ruined Chrysler????? When Mercedes took over Chrysler, Chrysler's rate of warrenty issues were some 48 reported repairs per 100 units sold compared to GM and Ford's less than 4 per 100 within the first 2 years of ownership. When Mercedes bailed Chrysler's rates had dropped to under 10 per 100 units. Chrysler's long term reputation ruined Chrysler.

In the late 90's my BIL, son and I conducted an informal survey of numbers and types of makes of vehicles in our area. 7 out of 10 vehicles seen on the road, pickup and smaller were, GM and Ford, 2 Chrysler's and one "other". I was working as a mechanic is an independent shop at the time. 1/2 of all auto tranny repairs we did were Chrysler and 4 out of 10 other repairs were Chrysler. That is what lead to their downfall.

Don't get me wrong Mercedes has had problems too ever sense they tried to break into the cheaper car market (under 50K).

The rest of your statement I agree with 100%.

Rick

It takes a lot of cash to import the parts from China. :>)

I broke a feed roll and one of the arms that holds'em on a CaseIH 781 last year. Price for them new wasn't much less than I paid for an 881 to replace the whole machine. I stripped a bunch of parts off the 781 and took it to the scrapper and got part of my money back,so when it was done,it was cheaper to buy the higher capacity 881 than it would have been to fix the otherwise worn out 781.

I needed cutter blades for my edger. Most places wanted $9.99 plus shipping. I called Moxley near Dublin and had 6 made for $4.00 each.

When I was still working at APG our metal shop would shear them and we drilled the 5/8 hole. Later on they had a hydraulic punch to make the hole. Sure miss those fringe benefits. Hal
