Oil leak... head or valve cover???

Hey Folks,

Have a pretty decent leak at the back of the motor coming from up high. Have to disassemble a bunch to get access, prolly do it next month when I have vacation. Hoping it's the valve cover, but what is the likelihood of a head gasket leaking oil? Tractor info is in the left margin under my name in modern view....
Motor was overhauled (with new HG) last year this time....... Tractor runs like a top, no water in oil or oil in water, doesn't burn oil, just the leak.....

What do you think I'll find VC or HG???

Could it be something else up there? My 450 leaks hytran from the power steering, drips down on top the valve cover.
Nate

Dave, head gasket doesnt leak oil.If head gasket leaks, you have problem with water in the oil and pisspoor compression and other related problems. LOU.

No problems at all.... Sending unit is down on the oil filter housing. Haven't touched the VC bolts, and there is nothing else up there. Hope I can squeeze a little time next week to pull some things apart. I have this vision of an RTV VC gasket so I'll grab a real one before I start.

We'll see......

Thanks.

Dave, I would just try tightening the bolts on the cover first, not German tight. One may have just worked itself loose. Just snug them up evenly.

Ha, Ha, that reminds me of my German uncle who twisted off spark plugs installing them.

Supposed to rain all day tomorrow, maybe I'll sneak it in the barn and check it out..... Starting to think about the sending unit tho. It's down lo, but thinking the fan may be blowing/smearing it..... Hopefully know tomorrow.

The fan would only blow it towards the back of the tractor. It may blow it upwrads but only on what's behind the engine. Look on the engine for the highest point, that there is wetness. That is the area your leak is located. If the sending unit is down low and you have wetness up high it's not the sending unit, unless it is shooting a stream of oil out of it.
