Oil filter quality

When I buy oil filters for my tractors I have one choice. I go to buy oil filters for my vehicles I have three choices. Fram offers a good, better, and best oil filter. So I stand there and decide if I want to spend the extra 4 bucks for their best filter. I picked the best filter they offered. I am now thinking, if I wasted my money going with the more expensive filter? Like the old saying first class cost just a little more, but does this apply to filters? Stan

Jd has offered the same FILTER, for 2 cyl horizontal and also fits some 4 cyls up rights for the last 60 years, and those tractors are still running, $3.00 + or -. Yes you now buy the o-ring gasket separate but then. WICKS are $8.00 same application.***********Guess what i buy? O buy the way wicks gives you the O-RINg for the extra $5.00 .

Yes, Deere charges extra for the gasket. Normally, I only change that rubber gasket every 4 or 5 times I change oil. If it looks good, I squirt a little grease on my fingertip and smear it in the groove with the old gasket. Never had one leak.

Stan there is a differants in in filter manufactures and between their cheap and expensive filters. About 8 years ago I delivered into a large oil dealer. He had a large filter display of all the major oil filter brands and the filters were cut in half so you could see how they were made. If you could have of seen it there are a lot of filters that you are really wasting you money on and they are doing a poor job of cleaning your oil. I tried fram and had problems with them and the freight line I worked for tried them and went back to Fleet Guard after losing three truck engines to filter related problems.

The more expensive Frams have increasingly tighter filter paper, removes smaller contaminantes. Removing smaller stuff means the filter media gets plugged quicker so likely the more expensive filters contain additional media to met the factory oil change requirements. If running in a dusty enviroment, I would seriously consider the more expensive filters. Air cleaners are only so good in removing dirt and some invariably gets to the oil which can cause more wear as it circulates around. If no gravel or off-road operation; not as much advantage. But a few extra filter/oil dollars isn't a big issue to me compared to hugely expensive repairs and replacement costs, therefore I buy the best Frams or something equivalent for on-road stuff and OEM for everything else. I've seen some complain about Fram but have used them for nearly 50 years and never had a problem.

Stan; We have used Fram for years with out any problems. There use to be, a filter case that used toilet paper as an element. I havn't heard of em since mas production of various mfg started flooding the market with their product. We change filters quite often and use the best we can buy. Like the man says, cheap protection against expensive repairs. LOU

There is an oil filter study on the net by a guy named Russ Kinze. Do a search for it. This study was published in May of 1999. This guy has tons of time on his hands and he tested all oil filters for leakage, hydrostatic burst, disintegration of the filter media, check valve effectiveness.
I remember this guy saying that the Fram filters were one of the worst. Wix and the Mobil 1 filters were the best. Very enlightening information with pictures too.

If the guy was so smart he could have when to work for a filter company. If they'd paid him a million bucks, they would not have had to do any more testing. He could just look at a filter and tell you if it was good or bad. They would have saved a lot of money.

I only use the best filters. Cheep insurance. I never use Fram filters. I've changed Cummins engines in Dodge pickups because the Fram filter element came apart.

I'll second Wile E. I remember the write-up on those tests and that Fram was one of the worst and WIX one of the best. My local independently owned auto parts store carries WIX and at Walmart you will see a half an aisle of Fram.

My local JD dealer charges more than $3
AR26350 ELEMENT,OIL,FILTER ADD 5.68 USD

Hastings, Donaldson, Fleetguard or Baldwin are the best. Wix has went down hill in recent years, and yes the OEMs will void the warranty on the diesel pickups if there is a FRAM oil filter on it at the time there is an oil related engine failure. The same applies to the washable air filters, like a K&N.
