I can truthfully say I've never made mac and cheese in my life.
Not once, ever - Till tonight.
I can't even remember the last time I ate it when someone made it for me.
But these were on sale so I bought a couple of them last week.
For some darned reason I had this notion that it must be good.
Well,
I'm here to report that it didn't live up to my expectations.
I did follow the directions and added just the right ingredients. To the letter!
But mac and cheese out of a box just isn't up to my liking.
Not to bash Kraft Foods mind you. They do make some good products.
Anyway,
I did eat some of it then gave the rest to the dog.
Then I smeared some peanut butter on the box and ate that instead. Washed it down with apple cider.
I'm full now. I'm glad to say.
But I'm hoping tomorrow morning wont cause me any problems with the cardboard. If you know what I mean.
I remember back in college years people lived on this stuff.
I can't imagine...

It took me YEARS to teach my first wife that (1) macaroni and cheese worth eating doesn't come from a box, and (2) spaghetti and meatballs worth eating don't come from a can.

That was my staple in college. Add a can of tuna one night, hamburger another. Wash it down with a little beer. Well that was college, a lot of beer!

Use to get that 10 boxes/$10. Not sure what it is now.

In college I couldn't afford the high priced Kraft Mac-n-cheese. I had to live off of Raman Noodles instead. LOL!

If I was feeling a little "Up-Town" I would splurge for a can of beans and mix it in the Ramin Noodles. Cant remember if its Raman or Ramin noodles now. God help me if I ever have to go back to that again. Thanks for the reality check on where I have been and how far I have come.

"I remember back in college years people lived on this stuff...."

That was if you had enough money left over after stealing away some beer money.....

I was a regular "galloping gourmet" at making Ramen Noodles.....for a treat maybe had a cup of hot water with some ketchup and crackers in it for a classy tomoato soup...

Amazing what a border does to box design. I am not a fan of Kraft Dinner/mac and cheese. Completely grosses me out. I tend to be a picky eater though.

We had a lot of it when the kids were little. Had some the other day for the first time in years (the grandkids were over- how time marches on), and it isn't as good as it used to be. And it isn't because my tastes have changed- I still like a good dose of junk food as much as I always have. But just doesn't seem to have any flavor, now.

Best mac and cheese in my youth was in hot lunch, at school. We had a couple farm wives as cooks, and they knew their stuff. Real mashed potatoes and hamburger gravy- good eatin', right there. . .

I should have known my first marriage was doomed when she put tunafish in the mac & cheese and called it "tuna noodle casserole"

Ugh!

DO NOT sully my mac & cheese with tunafish!

Years ago there was a brand of boxed m&c called Leonardo. That stuff was good! Beat Kraft by a mile. Can't find it anymore.

Guess you never had the real thing made with sharp cheddar cheese and baked in the oven. The box stuff has doubled in price. There are a lot of people who would be glad to have a box today.I see empty holes in the box mac and cheese section in the store.

Like 36 says, homemade mac and cheese using sharp cheddar is a real meal.
I don"t like the box M&C but all my grandkids just love it!!
BTW, my wife puts some sharp cheddar in her scalloped potatoes and ham; livens it up real well!

four for a buck
five brothers and sisters
that was fine dining in my house as a kid.

I actually love the stuff.

But, as a friend once put it - that stuff will teach you what it's like to be lactose intolerant.

God only knows what's in that bright orange cheese powder.

You havent lived till you had homeade mac & cheese, baked in the oven in a good old cast iron pan. I would pass up a steak at the finest steak joint around for good old fashoned mac & cheese in a pan. Thats living....

http://www.macheesmo.com/2010/07/cast-iron-mac-and-cheese/

I grew up on the stuff though, Kraft that is. Every day at the babysitters I would get a plate of mac & cheese with a cut up hotdog. Who in their right mind would pass up a gourmet meal like that to have a peanut butter and jelly sandwich?

I get a hankerin' for it every now and again. If you feel adventurous enough, there are a few easy improvments that can be made. The first & easiest is, make the sauce separate. I throw the butter, milk, & cheese powder in the hot (dry) kettle after dumping out the noodles to drain. Then add the noodles to the sauce. Something tells me, that alone might not solve the problem for you. You could add extra cheese, it helps some. Otherwise, I would suggest meat. Bacon, hot dogs, hamburger, tuna, they all help. Sliced dogs are my favorite, especially after being fried in BBQ sauce & onions. Bacon is certainly second.

I'm starting to think I should avoid eating anything orange or yellow altogether. That would include your darned squash and this stuff. :)
I'd probably keep eating carrots though. I like them.

you know what they say about cheese---BINDER and I don't need that!! I agree with you, most products that come in a box-----throw the contents away and eat the box, tastes better and more that likely the box costs more than whats in it anyway.

Only thing one I'll eat besides my wife's homemade is Kraft, but I add less milk - also important to get a good melt/mix on the cheese before adding the milk. Gotta use butter too - not margarine.
