Working on the rear right brake with a neighbor and was wondering how to get this drum off this truck. Its a 1969 Chevy C/50 Dump truck. To remove the drum, do we have to take out the three flathead bolts?
Back behind that drum is a leak in the brakes that loses a lot of fluid!

| A Tea20 Ferguson Tractor has the same thing and yes they must be removed, so applying the same principle to your situation, I would say "yes". i.e if you want the brake drum off. |

| The three screws do hold the drum to the hub but if you can get them out you may spend more time trying to get the drum off the hub than it takes you to pull the hub and drum together. The brakes are a lot easier to service with the hub out of the way. |

| I never seen a drum on one of'em held on by screws,,, I don't even remember seeing those screws :shock: I have serviced a bunch of'em but its been awhile... Remove the axle and take a pix of whats behind the axle fer us...

| Some of the GM "corporation" axles have just a cover on the end, which I believe you have, which you remove. The axle shaft has external teeth and the hub internal teeth with a threaded hole in tha axle for a bolt to just pull the axle out. The hub will still need to have the locking nuts removed and the bearing etc pulled off. Point is, not all rear axles are the remove the nut/bolts and smack the end, style. |

| | No, Those screws just hold the drum to the hub. Take off the nuts at the end (sometimes, you have tosmack the axle with a two pound hammer to loosen the wedges), then remove them along with the axle. Inside, you'll find two lock nuts with a lock washer between 'em or a locking ring. After you get these parts removed, the outter bearing, hub with inner bearing and seal can then be pulled off. It's a lot easier than you'd think. One or both of the brake cylinders inside is leaking the fluid. Allan |

| Easiest way I know of is to pull the axle and the remove the locknut, retainer, bearing nut, and then you should be able to pull the hub with the drum still on it. Saves a lot of work. |

| I think those screws need to come out. Also you prolly need to back off on the adjuster screw, cause sometimes the drum will hang on a wear ridge, and not slide out. |
