I am in Middle/west Tennessee and yes little to early here. We always sow some for Dove field then disk it up and plant the real planting somewhere last week of Sept. Planted this early it wil joint before freezing weather. What part of Tennessee and where di you get your seed ? jm. Dover Tn.

Aroumd here, we do not plant wheat until after Sept. 15 to avoid damage from Hession fly.

Might ask one of the farmers near you or your county agent; it's too early in West Tennessee.

i dont know about tenn. here in IN, my uncle planted so early one year he went out and mowed it before winter. it went 100 bu./ac back when that was unheard of. yes, rye is a better forage crop. we always planted rye, chopped it then double-cropped corn (for silage).

Not much seeded in central MN anymore, but that"s usually in the first half of Sept. Any chance you could spread some mulch in the swales to hold the soil for awhile? I know, with the drouth, even mulch might be needed for cattle feed.

Yes it is too soon for winter wheat. I would wait until Sept. and plant Rye instead. It can be planted earlier and will make better hay. Wheat is hard to make dry hay out of. To get much in the way of feed value you need to catch it in the dough stage. Then it takes some time to dry down. That often is hard to do weather wise. Wheat is really a poor forage crop.

I have used forage Rye and it is more of a grass. So it is made without any heads on it. Plus is will come up faster and grow faster come spring.

Just my thoughts, but yes. I say it is too early. The seedlings will get too large before cold weather.
