As you may recall TS Debby dumped alot of rain in SE. Found and repaired many leaks around the vent pipes on 12 yr. old home (N. FL).

Problem:
The attics are vented with thermostatically controlled roof mounted fans. Both have died.

Question:
Replace roof mounted fans or install passive ridge line vents?

Thanks in advance fellas!

I'd go with the non powered vents. The fans use electric, and have been known to cause fires, when they fail. Just make sure to have a thorough system, with soffet vents, and the vents that go above the roof insulation.

If you are already roofing, then I would say install the ridge vents. However I would keep the fans in place and use them to supplemnt the hot air removal. The motors are easy to fix, and it can be done from on top of the roof which is usually the easiest way if your house is a one story house. I fix about 3 or 4 of them a year and most of the "guts" interchange from fan to fan. I have also heard about these starting fires but I have never personally seen any of this happening.

My daughter has those attic fans and they come on a certain temp. In FL they may run constantly. Hal

(quoted from post at 06:01:31 08/19/12) To make your post "correct", the roof must cover the house of a TRACTOR owner.LOL

Hail took my roof out last fall. Went back with ridge vent and continues soffet vent. Eliminated all other attic venting that was present. Amazing the difference in comfort inside, reduced HVAC run time and of course the electric bill (all electric). Would recommend to anyone. This is in southeast Arkansas.
