1989 Ford ranger truck new problem

Ok so got it running agin and have 1 or 2 bolts in that hold the TFI module in. The one that is in is the wrong bolt and tread but it was there when I changed it out so used it. The problem is that ford no longer services those bolts as in you can not buy them and they are not just the common S.A.E. tread bolts so where can a guy find 1. Yep only need to one since I know the treads for the other would be messed up any way.
Thanks

I'm guessing you need to buy a new used distributor for it (wrecking yard) or if you're feeling sporty get a rebuilt from an auto parts store

Get self tapping bolt that will fit. And don't forget the goo stuff that you put under the model or you have to do it all over again.

It is in fact a special bolt as in it is pipe thread and has a 7/32 head to it and about a 1/4 inch long and in a place that you can not tap it out because you have almost no room to do any thing with it. It sits in a blind area where it is all you can do to reach it let alone see what your doing so you have to do it by feel so a blind guy could install the bolt if you put his hands in the right area

That was already done when I installed it with the incorrect bolt that was in it when I started this project. It runs the way it is but would prefer to have 2 bolts in instead of just the one that some one else had done and messed things up

If it's in the distributor, a whole new (rebuilt?) one is 60 bucks at rock auto. Just run it and tell her to be prepared to spring for the 60 later if needed...

Did you ever think of going to a junk yard?

Should be able to find that special bolt there without much trouble and not much money for a tiny bolt.

Any good hardware store should have a metric bolt with that thread. It will probably be a different head, but you can live with that.

Problem is it is not metric or S.A.E but a pipe thread and only made for that one application and ford no longer sells them. We ordered them from ford one day and went to pick them up the next day and low and behold they are not longer available

Not inside it is a part the bolts to the out side and is not included with a rebuild distributor as in it is sold as another part. And the bolts are not included with either the distributor or the module

all the EECIV distributors use the same bolts to hold the TFI module...'84 up

Old,
Can you post a pic of where the bolt goes and the dist?
I can try and stop at a pick and pull and see if they have any Rangers.

These fancy fasteners are for the birds.

I really doubt it's a pipe thread. Pipe goes down to 1/16" or .3125" o.d. Measure the good bolt with a caliper and see if Fastenal has it. Metric bolts break down into 1/2 mm sizes when they get that small.

If threads are already bugged up. Just pull dist out , tap new threads for whatever bolts or Screws to fit . Have done it many times . Yes it's a pain to pull dist out and retime it. But easier than fighting trying to get screw it that more than likely will break off before you get it tight due to bad threads .Suck it up ,pull the dist .

At the risk of being shot: Click the link below! (Now Im really putting my life on the line) Its not pipe thread bolts/screws, and yes this will work on that truck, so dont op up and claim its some majical Ford Ranger and its the only one like it!

Good one John. I tried to send him to the Ranger Station way back when he first posted about the Ranger problem, but I'm not sure he ever looked. Tons of great information and if you can't find what your looking for you can always register and ask.....just like here on YTMag!

That maybe true but finding the bolt with the correct treads is not all that easy . Ford and the local parts places all come up with nothing but incorrect treads on the bolts and yep even the guys at ford said the bolts are not the off the shevle bolts

I'll check out that link when I get some time later today.
As for the bolt all I know is both the Ford dealer and ALL the auto parts store say those bolts are not run of the mill on the shelve bolts

As per the ford dealer you have to pull the injector system off to be able to pull the distributor and one one of 2 bolt holes have bad treads so again I want to do it as right as I can so goes back to needing one proper bolt to bolt it in all the way

Again that is part of the problem I do not have a proper as in the correct bolt so I can not measure it and then have the correct bolt. Plus fastenal in this area only sells by the box as in 100 bolts and I need only 1

NAPA has their own brand and unique numbers but most other stores have access to Dorman/Help products. try Dorman part number 49820.

module screw

Ya we have one but the people in that place have no clue as to how to find a rock let alone an auto part. Have a friend who is going to do a bit of looking to see if he may have one laying around. Since this is not my truck and doing this for a friend I want ti done correctly if I can do so

I think "auto grade" is Dorman's branding of fasteners for
cars. If you snoop around their site for wheel bolts and
other parts you'll see the same name.
