What chance do I have to ask the ford dealer to give me a discount on 20 qts of Ford Merkon V. They want over 8.00 a qt. I can get valvoline merkonV for around 6.00 or castrol Merkon V for about the same price. I just thought Ford oil will be better? Anyone ever done this with Ford? Stsn

There are no major quality differences between oils these days. Heck they buy base oils on the "Spot Market" along with additives. Buy price.

I did a lot of formulation and blending work for Gulf Research and Development over the years. The objective is to meet the minimum spec.

Because you pay more means nothing.

The base stock is different and the additive package will be Lubrizol and is the same in all the MerconV oils.

It won't be any better but there's nothing wrong with going that route. The Ford dealership here gives the same discount as the parts houses to mechanic's. If you get a friendly parts guy you can get 20 percent off without any problem.

Well how valuable is a transmission repair job on this car/truck????? You need twenty quarts so that tells me it is not a small transmission. So you are talking about maybe saving $40-50 dollars against a few thousand dollar repair bill. Your call but I know how I would go.

As for the dealer cutting the price on just a $160 ticket. On an item that they make very little margin on any way. You can ask but I really doubt that they will do much.

For the guys that tell you to buy the cheapest oil you can find. You fellows keep buying the cheapest oil/grease/anti freeze you can find. Myself and the other mechanics in the country wish to Thank You for the extra business!!!!

Same thing as the expensive medicines versus the Generics..Same Horse, different jockey.

Greg1959.Be fair.. Don"t condemn the WHOLE country by the auctions of a few rogues.. Your Banks who precipitated the GFC would be another example.

Dang, when did all this happen? I checked with autozone and their price in west Texas runs from $4.49 to $6.99 per quart, last I bought was like 2 bucks a quart from Wal Mart.

I'd ask. What's the harm?

They're not likely to give you a discount on one, but on 20?

Maybe.

Specially if you bought it there or deal there locally.

Se veral years ago I went down and picked up a load for a local dealer..at that time it was packaged at VAVOLINE refinery. I doubt that FORD ever made any oil.

You can certainly try to deal with them, and even if they turn you down (which I think they will), they won't call the cops and have you arrested. You'll just be doing what door-to-door salesmen do every day

I bought a freezer from Monkey Wards many years ago, and on a whim, asked them to knock 100 bucks off the price. AND THEY DID! Could'a knocked me over with a feather. So it never hurts to try.

Ford just bids the oil out. Put in the cheapest oil that meets the specs, and you'll be doing the same thing that ford does!

Thats not really true. I worked in a lab and blending unit for years.

Not trying to be a smart butt. Why do you think China added melamine to infant formula? Answer: So it would meet specs. But it still wasn't any good.

We used different base-stocks and additives to blend the oil following manufactures spes. Some are better than others even though all of them met American Petroleum Institute specs.
