This might seem like a silly question. I was wondering if anyone knew a good inexpensive way of making a steering wheel keep from turning your hands black. I have a H, M and a M5. I have painted the steering wheel on the M when i painted the rest of it. I know the obvious answer is to buy a new wheel. Thanks for and suggestions.

Thanks for the input, looks like paint it will be, I bet I cant stop there. Looks like I'll be painting the H and the M5 soon. I extremely dislike wearing gloves.

My steering wheel was cracked and missing parts of the plastic or whatever it is made of. So I filled in the low spots with silicon caulk and wrapped it with bicycle handlebar tape. Easy to do and gives a textured surface. It has been on several years and is still nice and shiny. TDF

Mine wsa all cracked into pieces, but they were still sticking on. I went to O"Reilly"s and got a can of black spray-on truck bed coating, pulled the steering wheel off, laid it on piece of cardboard, and sprayed the plastic. Several times, front and then back. It looks fine, has a good very grippy surface, is black. I sanded the sharp edges off, sprayed it a few times more. I like it a lot.

Clean it with something like simple green or 409 until you think you got the grease/dirt off (will always get some black).. Then seal it with something or wax it... Then throw a towel or something over it when sitting in the sun. And wear gloves so you don't fill it with grease from your hands. That's the cheap way.

Wipe it down with a paint thinner. Then paint it with a clear coat. Never have any trouble after that.

Paint it again with 2 pack or 2K paint or just 2K lacquer, it will be a long time before you wear through that paint!

You drive it enough and it will get polished and it will no longer turn your hands black.Or just wear gloves.

I wrap mine with Super 88 electrical tape. Spendy tape but it stays on.
