alternators

what is the size of the nut that retains the battery wire to the back of 12 volt alternators such as sold by Yesterday's Tractors for converting electrical systems to 12 volts.

Onefarmer,

Thank you for the reply. I asked the question incorrectly. What I meant was the thread size of the nut that retains the battery wire. One I'm working on is 24 volt 40 amp negative ground. Notes I have in the manual for the tractor: 1968 HD 6 crawler looks like the alt. is a 10s1 alternator. Replaced the originial 24 volt generator with the delco alternator due to the cost to repair the generator. Fields and armature were bad in the gen. and needed a new voltage regulator. Gen was only a 10 amp delco.

It's been a while, but I'm thinking you're asking about a 12-24? If it's smaller than 1/4", and bigger than the common 10-24(3/16") screw size, then it's 12-24.

Bob,

Thank you,

Had the alternator at the local NAPA store and salesperson sold me a NF 1/4 which was too loose. Should have checked it myself but didn't try the nut until I had the alternator on the machine. Machine is located a long ways away from local parts. stores. I'll take some 12 -24 nuts with me today.

Owen,

Thank you for the information. Found out today that the battery terminal on the alternator is 6mm. This is on a 24 volt internally regulated Delco. 12 volt conversion on my TE 20 uses the same 6 mm nut to secure the battery terminal. Size must be determined by the rebuilder or manufacturer on new alternators.
I'm going to put this information in a file on my computer.

Delco changed the later SI series alternators to metric fasteners about 1980 but you can find all kinds of combinations on rebuilt units. The through bolts and internal fasteners were not changed but you can have any combination of front frame, rear frame, and output stud. In fact the metric stud that you have is only metric on the outside. The inside thread is still 12-24.
