Finally it would short to the frame requiring a hit with a hammer to cause the armature to BOUNCE enough to get it spinning. Seems that the problem was the armature shaft that rides in the bronze bushing was reduced in diameter allowing it to strike the case. New starter solved the problem and I didn't have to split the tractor and redo the ring gear like I originally thought I'd have to do. Starter was new and I bought it for about $150. Money well spent. I think I went on line looking for it. Don't remember where I got it nor where it was made. It works great whatever. Mark   [Reply]  [No Email]

If it isnt too bad you can remove turn it around and put back on. You will need a torch to get it warm enough to remove clean the grouve on the flywheel and re-install then get a new Bendix get the starter refurbished brushes maybe a bearing or two and it will start like new again. Also clean the connections starting at the battery mite also need a new saddle sw. Ive done them many times. You have a choice of the Bendix as there are two types available either one will work for many yrs to come.   [Reply]  [No Email]

I'm not saying the starter drive isn't bad, but the flywheel just might be the culprit too. Could be a combination of the two. Jim   [Reply]  [No Email]
Janicholson 08-06-2012 20:03:44 96.24.99.126 Report to Moderator	Re: starter rebuild in reply to bkpigs, 08-06-2012 19:58:23   If by grinding you mean it spins but fails to turn the engine, making gear stripping noises, It might need a new drive pinion assembly. There is a new style that is totally different, but installs with ease. It seems to fix multiple grinding and jambing issues. This site sells good parts, and they are available from many sources. I would put in new bushings, and new brushes. Having the armature turned true with a minimum cut (lathe) is also good practice. Jim   [Reply]  [No Email]
