Dryer sheets, I have a '94 ranger in my yard, that once was home of mice, after gutting the interior to the firewall, dash completely out, cleaned the entire cab, put most of it back, taped off the duct, and kept dryer sheets inside, they do not come back, and with a hint of any previous odor they would always come back.
I hate the bait, they die in some inaccessible place, and reek for awhile. Snap traps are great, but you had best not forget to check those, had that happen in the trunk of my mustang cobra, well once it was removed, aired it out and the odor did go away.
I had a bunch of them at the house here, they must have gotten ahead of me, as I usually notice and set traps, catch a few and traps clean, finally wiped em all out, traps are clean for 2+ weeks now.
I like the live traps by Victor, that TSC sells, because you can get up to 4 mice in there, one stays in, pees, leaves droppings, besides the bait, that leaves a scent and draws more in. The bait I use is Kashi, Pumpkin-Flax Seed granola bars, it has a strong scent, they love it, deer mice/whitefoot mice or whatever they are, easy to use, just break off a piece, use the crumbs.
Downstairs in the basement/garage, I often times will sit in the "mancave" and watch the ball game, and I can literally hear that trap with the galvanized metal door open and close, when I first put them out, 2 went in, one after the other.
I had a pesky one that kept coming back, I had tossed em out live, in a field nearby, painted this one, she came back 3x, last time, just for fun, I went a 1/4 mile or so into our adjacent land across a field, did not come back, of course it rained too, cleaned up any scent I think, but now and its just easy to drown em/clean the trap at the same time, reset, no chance of seeing them again.
So far, all the mice, not a sign of one, 16 chipmunks, 1 pending, 3 woodchuck, a 4th one pending, are gone. I have lots of cotton tail rabbits, friendly, but they bother nothing, just eat all the white clover on the lawn, garden is fenced, place was just over run, too much habitat, cleaning more of that today. That is the real problem, any clutter, your wood pile, vehicles, they get a foothold, even without food like birdfeeder droppings, spilled grain etc. have to tidy up and eliminate any habitat, we even have a bunch of stray cats, and still they prosper, darned things are persistent.
