Leaving for Austin Wednesday on business. Flying.
Anyway, will have up to Saturday morning before coming back. Days will be filled with work, but evenings.... well, I really can't sit in a hotel room very long. Also travel by myself, so what I do is usually up to me.

Anything tractor related would be great.

Also, any ideas on things to see, eats, music, etc? I try to steer clear of the chains, prefer the local places. I'm a big music fan (a musician too...), most all types. Music and tractors are 2 of my vices...

Thanks for any help.

Tony

Go down to the Congress Street bridge just before sunset and watch the bats that live there leave for their evening feeding session. It's truly an amazing spectacle.

The Austin Steam Train Association offers several different railroad excursions to different destinations and return.

What part of town will you be staying in??

Go down to 6th street & check out all the live music down there. Not sure if you"d have time to squeeze it in, but you can attend Austin City Limit tapings if you are lucky.

The Oasis restaurant out on Lake Travis is quite famous locally with a killer view while you eat.

There are a ton of great places to eat all around the UT campus. Taj Palace has great Indian food. Players is a student hangout on MLK with great milk shakes. There were a lot of great Oriental mom & pop places along Lamar...

I never did see much "tractor" stuff while I lived down there, but that was when I was a student at UT and before I got the old-iron bug real bad... And you may not have time for tractors, anyway, with as much great music as there is down there...

PS - I always love to go to Amy's Ice Cream, too, while I'm down there. It is now a chain, but she started the first one while I was in business school down there, so it has been neat to see her business take off.

Hard to beat their Mexican Vanilla mixed with strawberries!!!

Spend a couple hours on the river walk. Well worth the walk and great restaurants. If you got lucky your hotel is there.

If you want to see some tractors and combines in action, take Hwy. 290 East, then North on FM 973 towards Taylor, and tour the New Sweden area. Maize, corn harvest and hay baling in full swing in that area, and you might be interested in seeing the huge steeple on the New Sweden Lutheran Church. As for Bar-B-Que, I recommend Southside Market or Meyer's BBQ in Elgin, both located on Hwy 290.

Ask at the hotel, look up austin's webpage on the net. If you like food, skip a meal at the usual places and go down to the Whole Foods Flagship store, next to their corporate HQ. Their salad/warm food counters are to die for, got also table and chairs for exactly that reason. Take a "seeduction" bread home with you for the family.
Try local beer, there are 7 plus in the city itself, More on the outskirts!! Frequent college hangouts for lotsa fun!Check texastroubadour.com for local musical acts. I think they also have a weekly local paper with things to do....Rent a bicycle for a while and go on a trip! Or sign up for a culinary class/presentation at Whole Foods!!

I will second the Salt Lick. It is located in Driftwood and well worth the drive. As I recall you can BYOB if you want but you might want to double check that.

There is one in Round Rock also. My wife and I took my sister and bro-in-law, and to be honest, none of us were that impressed. My wife does a better brisket than they do. If you like the night life, go to 6th Street, lot's of bars playing live music.

Austin is a wonderful place! Ive been there a few times, and really like it. Idk about tractor related places, but the food there is awesome. I really like Maudie's and Chuy's, not sure if they're chains or local or what tho. Rudy's is pretty good too, and im sure there are other places that are worth going back for.

If you wanna go souvenir shopping, Cavanders is great, its all western wear, and aside from all the boots and jeans and shirts, they've got plenty of tee shirts and hats and things that would make mean souvenirs, but be careful, its easy to spend a lot of money in that place.

Anyway, enjoy the trip :)
