tractor tires

I need rear tires for my JD 4230. They are 18.4 - 34
Who makes a good quality tire? I would like to buy American made if possible. Bias or radial? They wont ever be on pavement.
The local co op sells samson tires 950 dollars but think they are china made. Michellins are 1500. I would appreciate any advice. Thanks

My brother has a tire business and he says the china tires are a huge disaster. Most rot off in a few short years. He put a few on and they all came back wanting them replaced under warranty, which there is none, after just a few years. Now he refuses to put any on. It doesn't even seem to matter if they are kept indoors.

BKT tires are made in India, right?

I'll probably get lambasted for saying this but between the two, India makes much better stuff than China as a general rule.

Other than that, you've got your Firestones, Titans (Good Year?), and Michelins. Michelins are crazy expensive. Titans are probably the least expensive of the USA brands.

I would recommend bias tires on your 4230, American made if possable. Bias have a stiffer/stronger sidewall and they usually cost less than the same size radial.

Firestone's have been very good for me, at least 4 sets over the past 10 years or so. Just put new 18.4x34's on my 4020 last year and it was $1850 total for the two tires, two tubes, and on farm service call, including fluid pumping. I have been very happy with all of them.

Thanks for the help! Firestones were pretty reasonable. I found a place that has 2 used ones (75%) for a little better than half the price of one new tire. That should last me a long time. This is a great place to get info. Thanks again!

i am scared of the chinese 18.4x 34 also. guy here wanted to sell me some for 680.00 ea. but that low price scared me even more. so i found 2 good used ones for my 650 and went that way. firestones were almost 1000.00 for one.

All joking aside, the tire repair guy here told me the Chinese tractor tires they sell are better than the American made ones, but a whole bunch cheaper. I know it's not what anybody wants to hear, but that's the opinion of the guy who installs and repairs them.

the thing is they have not been out long enough for them to prove themselves. would be nice to visit some 4-5 yr.installations so could get a first hand look, instead of hearsay. there is a lot of 25-30 yr. old firestones out there still going. those chinese tires looked very soft to me , so it appears like they would wear out in no time. devel know's for now. wonder what makes him think they are better?

Bias or radial? Depends on their usage. Radial is much better for tillage. Better traction, cost more.

I bought a Chinese tire for my hay rake (not by choice, by necessity). It was rated load range C, which is pretty good. It is so soft I had five flats while raking hay - the stubble was puncturing it. The other tire on the rake is an American made wheelbarrow tire and it holds up to the stubble. Don't buy Chinese.
