Ford 5000 PTO

I was topping off my gearbox fluid this morning. when I went to take out the fluid level plug, I inadvertently took out a bolt that I thought was the plug. Now my PTO does not work. The bolt was a 9/16 bolt just forward of the PTO lever on the left side. This bolt has about 1/2 inch of thread near the bolt head and then about a 1 1/2 in long shaft that sticks inside the transmission. I had quite a time getting this bolt back in.
Any ideas? I hate to take the transmission cover off.

Drain oil, take lh step off, round plate off and will let you push pto valve up so bolt can be installed. The level plug is on lh side in back. square head pipe plug.

Thanks for the reply shaun. I found the level plug in the back. Are you saying I need to remove the left hand step, then remove a plate that will let me move something? That is where I am not clear. i am able to replace the bolt with some effort, but the PTO does not engage. What am I looking for when I remove that plate?

The bolt you removed is a sort of locating pin for the PTO cluth assembly. Once you get the plate off it should be pretty obvious what needs to be moved back into place. Dont feel bad I made the same dumb mistake you did when I first got my 5000. Hopefully you didnt mess up anything else when you forced the bolt back in.

Warren, I spent a little time looking at the parts diagram on the CNH website. The PTO clutch arrangement is basically the same as on my 9000 and my 8240. The whole clutch assembly rides on the PTO shaft and would spin around it if not for the locating pin that you removed. Upon removal the valve assembly would have rotated CCW a little and when you got the pin back in it most likely went in just above the arm that it is supposed to be in instead of through the hole. With the pin in the wrong place, the most likely problem is that the Hydraulic line that supplies the clutch valve got disrupted and is leaking. With the access plate off as Shaun suggested you can get the valve up to where the locating pin will go where it needs to go, but while it is off, try to check the integrity of the hyd. line going into the bottom of the valve.

Wow! All I can say is Thanks! Thanks for the quick response. This forum is great. I will try to look at it today - if I can survive the 95 degree heat!
