OTabove ground pool winter cover thinking ahead

2nd year for 24 ft pool. Last winter I bought a "poly tarp" style cover that secures with a cable around the pool. I used the pillow in the center and kept excess water off. the Cable promptly wore through the paint on the sides of the pool in several spots and the cover is worn thin. I pass a house every day that has a cover like a truck tarp and he secures his with ropes to the ground all the way around pulling it tight on the pillow, thus avoiding pooling and no cable rubbing. Any one have a cover like this? What brand is it? And, spare me the "glad to see my pool go" lecture.

At least you know what the rest of us think of pool maintenance. I'd think any place that sews up truck tarps could custom make one for you. Something that big would be heavy to ship. I'd think you would want to buy local.

Its been about 20 years, but I remember having one from the pool supply place with the pillow, and holding it tight with about a dozen milk jugs filled with water.

After 18 years of having a 24' above ground pool this is how I handle the cover situation. I installed small tarp hooks on each post about 12" below the top rail and use 3/16" nylon string across the top of the cover from post to opposite post. Then I cut small plastic strips from milk jug and put those under the strings on top of the post. Pull the strings extremely tight. Then install the wire thru the eyelets and tighten. Keep any water pumped off the cover while the cover is on. A syphon hose works good too. You will not need the pillow. I live out in the country here in central Texas and get lots of wind which is what tears up the covers. Using this method a cover usually last 5-6 years. Buy the covers with a 10 years warranty and you wont have to buy another one for several years. They keep replacing the torn ones under warranty. This sounds like alot of work but once the hooks are installed it only takes about 30 minutes to install the cover by myself. I roll up the strings and save them from year to year. The wind is my biggest enemy here. If you can keep the wind from blowing the cover it will last alot longer.

Loop lock makes a cover that has spring straps to hold it in place and allows the water to go through while keeping the dirt out. They are not cheap but work great (southern MI). I have been using one for 7 years.

I used to use pool covers for years. The easiest way is to not use any cover at all. I have done this for 4 years now and it is a lot easier in the fall and the spring. No hassles at all. Just make sure you keep chlorine in the pool and sweep it out come spring. Best investment for a pool is the best filter you can afford, and at least one size bigger than you need. I have had a pool for over 15 years, so I have had a little experience. Save your money and don't use a cover.

I was wondering if a leaf netting would be better, that way it will keep the leaves and other debris out. Anyone ever do this?
