I have a bad rod bolt on MH 44, no new replacements. What is the opinion on using grade 8 fine thread?

Take one of your good ones to an auto parts store and they should be able to find many of them in that same size. Rod bolts are like many other bolts they do not just fit one application so you may find a rod bolt form a Chev or a Ford may have some the exact same size

There is no reason why a regular grade 8 bolt won't work.I use them in SC Case tractor rods all the time. Just make sure they aren't to long.

After looking at size"s in an ARP catalog, I
noted a Ford size that would work on a Wisconsin
engine..and then picked it up at a local Ford
dealer parts counter.

In the event you can not find a replacement:

1) Comparing the OEM torque spec for the MH 44 rod bolt to the standard value for a grade 8 bolt that will give you an idea of how the strenght compares.

2) Carefully compare the rod bolt features to your grade 8 replacement. For example, sometimes rod bolts use a shoulder to pilot the cap.

Good luck

David where are you located.? I built quit a few of those old engines when antique tracor pulling was hot. I would say I can put my hands on a rod boldt but not sure. Know I have some hot heads like big valves and a lot of port work.
Give me a direct e-mail or try and hook up some way , I might solve your problem.
