boots on posts

Driving around checking fields an my youngest asked me why they put boots on top of fenceposts. I have no idea.

Decoration. There's a bunch of boots on fenceposts along a highway in central Kansas and I can't think of the number of the highway right now. It's a north south main road. Someone from Kansas help me out. Jim

I have heard some put them there in the hopes of keeping rain from soaking in but most all posts rot from the bottom up. I vote for decoration too.

You see this a lot in the Flint Hills of Kansas (ranch country). An old rancher near my Uncle's ranch told me "it was to show folks how many pair of boots he had trashed out on this Da^# place" I ask him where was the wife's boots? That set old Andy off on a whole nother story. Great old cowboy to be around. Turned 90 last May.

Jim, seems to me that on ks-177 close to the old Z-bar ranch, near Strong City some rancher has a long line of boots on the fence posts.

You obviously do not live in a area that gets a lot of rain.
Every post I have ever replaced rotted out on the top. Never have had one rot from the bottom.

But the boots are most likely some kind of decoration. Sheet metal or tin cans on the post top would be a rot preventer.

Well, I've heard of a lot of the reasons and I guess each one depends on the owner who put them there.

that'd depend on whether the boots were in a pair with extra wide legshafts and on a post close to a water hole..... Sheep don't like water too well so I'm told :roll:

I've got a neighbor that puts old lotion bottles on top of his steel fenceposts.

What he's doing with all the lotion... I don't want to know. ;-)

Did you notice if the toe of the boots were pointing North or South?
