JD 30/20 powershift

I have a jd 30/20 powershift tractor and when I was driving it it stopped and would not move in either foward or reverse. The leaver near my left foot when sitting on the tractor is just flopping around so I pulled the floor cover off and there seems to be a spring missing on the linkage to this leaver. Would this have anything to do with the tractor not moving when put in gear.

The lever by your left heel sticking up through the platform (on early models) is the tow disconnect. Yes it will stop all movement as it disconnects the transmission from the differential. The lever latches in the slot in the platform to hold in position. Lever to rear is connected for driving. Late models have a different lever underneath the platform that does the same thing.

Thanks Cliff. Do you know where I might buy one of these springs. Are they a special JD part or can I substute with an after market spring. I live in Australia.

Like Cliff stated below the lever is the tow disconnect lever. The lever itself is made to spring side ways and lock into the deck plate. Put your deck plate back on. Then if the lever does not lock in place just bend it a little so it is pre-loaded against the deck plate.

To get it to engage I usually rock the tractor back and forth on the tire. DO NOT HAVE THE TRACTOR RUNNING!!!!!! when engaging this. Two very important reasons for that. 1) It can run over you if it is not in park. 2) The shifter is just a splined hub and it is not made to be engaged while running. I have seen guys do it while it is running and strip the splines out of the hub. You have to remove the rock shaft housing and a bunch of other stuff to replace that coupler. SO DON"T ENGAGE it while running.

Another thing get an operators manual. There is different knowledge needed to service and operate a PS than a syncro range transmission. The operators manual goes over all of the controls on the tractor including the tow dis-connect lever.

Here's parts schematics to help illustrate what Cliff & JDseller were referring to. Parts key #12 in first schematic fits in groove of parts key #17 in the 2nd schematic.

TX jim's posting shows the lever and components of the tow disconnect. Lever #1 should be bent in against the deck plate and catch on the latch #21. The latch has slotted holes in it so you can adjust it to make sure the shift collar #17 is held all of the way engaged.

Hi Cliff, when I drained the transmission oil to retrieve the spring I also found a bush floating around with the spring. It is approxmitly 25mm o.d. 12mm i.d. and 15mm wide. Do you have ant idea wher this might have come from.
