There has been some discussion lately of whether retorqueing cylinder heads is really necessary. Had the head off my Farmall H about 3 weeks and 4hours running time ago.Today I decided to see whether it was still torqued at 70 foot pounds. Let it run for a few minutes to warm up and then took the valve cover and rocker shaft off. The torque had decreased to a low 55 foot pounds to a high of 65 foot pounds. I retorqued everything back to 70 foot pounds for three times around.Think from now on I will retorque head studs after replacing head gaskets. Joe |

| Some head gaskets are marketed at no retorque. I still checked them on warmup but didn't follow up like 100 hrs later as we were supposed to do on other engines. With the head torque sequences used on todays engines you just about throw everything you ever learned, out the window. IH changed their methods later on in the 400 series engines but the biggest changes I actually did was when I worked on the John Deere's. I'm talking mainly about the sequence not the torque turn method which also comes into play. Just didn't seem right to me going right down one side instead of working your way out from the middle to ends. |

| i remember your post and there were some who said you didn't have to retorque, when i was in automotive school there were specs for only torqueing once but you had to exceed the amount you wanted by so much,.. if you wanted 70 lb. you would go to 95 then when it warmed up you had 70...anything i rechecked after warmup always needed some more torque |
