Read this morning that Doc died at 89. He was one fine musician. A few years ago, he came to Walhalla, SC with his grandson and played even though his doctor had told him to take it easy and especially not yodel. He had a respiratory infection. He did great and yodelled anyway. Near the end of the show, a few locals were invited up on stage to play. My son stood beside Doc and fiddled as he played. Great memory for my son.
Yesterday, Bill Lowe and his wife Connie came by to house to visit and we talked about Doc and the times they had spent and played together.
For a man who was blind from his first year, Doc really made something of himself.

He was one of a kind that's for sure and he could "pick the splinters" out of a fretboard. Great fella.

RIP Doc.

Quite a few Grammys for him too. The only station near me that mentioned him passing was a college station that plays variety but has knowledgable DJs.

Doc Watson lived about a hour from me in Wilkes county, NC. He did a lot for mountian music in this area. His son was killed when a tractot rolled over on him in 1985. Do a search for Merle Watson as there is an interesting story about him. Doc Watson started Merlefest at Wilkes Community College which drew a large crowd from all over each year. Doc will be missed greatly around here. DH

Here is a picture I took of Doc back in '81 or '82. He used to perform at Milwaukee's Summerfest for several years around that time.

The last time I saw Doc was 3-4 years ago in Madison, WI. After the show you could meet and talk to Doc. Just like talking to your neighbor in your backyard. I shook his hand and got his autograph too. He was the fastest, cleanest picker with the most "flavor added" I've ever heard.[/img]

I remember seeing Doc Watson playing for tips outside the old K-mart in Lenoir NC about 1970. I didn't know who he was then, just that he was a blind man playing a guitar. His son Merle lived in the Kings Creek area between Lenior and Wilkesboro NC. Merlefest held in honor of Merle Watson each spring at Wilkes Comm College draws thousands from around the country, and most all the artist from Nashville have been there. He had a special gift and was a humble man.
