unrolling a round bale

trying to get away from square bales just cant get the help anymore to get them in anymore .i make rounds with a nh 850 so there not the tightest bales to start with .thinking about putting one up on end and kinda unroll it as needed to feed the wifes horses when there in there stalls which is mostly in the winter on really bad days or nights anyone ever do it this way.

Yup, stand them up on their end and just start unrolling. Worst is doing it in the wind. If you can do it inside somewhere, then it wouldn't be so bad. Goes nice and the animals waste a lot less than just dropping the bales out.

Yep, stand them on end in the barn away from the wall. Just unwind the hay, then put the hay in a big wheelbarrow and feed that way. Easy, fast and very little waste.

I have used an old time hay knife to cut one or two slices into the bale laying on its side. With a good knife the hay is easy to cut. The portions of the bale are easily removed then without tugging at them. If the round bales are very heavy, they can be tough to stand on end by yourself.

If you have 20 or 30 feet of alleyway, you can just unroll; when that is fed, spin the bale 180 degrees and unroll more. The only tough part is knowing which way it unrolls.

Yep, stand them up on end take the twine off, fire up the chain saw and cut as deep as the bar is and feed the chunks with a fork. Did that for 2 years. Bud

You funny. Why do I say that well if you know how to do it you can make a bale so tight and so heavy with a NH850 that you can not get a bale spike into them. Slow down and they get tight. Learned that the hard way a few years back when I first got my NH850 and my Ford 841 instead of lifting the bales lifted the rear end off the ground and that was with a lot of extra weight on the rear end to boot. The slower you go the tighter and heavier they will be and I have made 2000LBS plus bales.

Chainsaw works great as long as there isn't too much stringy grass. Back when I was a lot younger and didn't have any money I pitched round bales into the sileage chopper instead of hiring a tub grinder. I quartered them with the chainsaw and they just fell apart. Stringy grass will wrap around the crankshaft behind the clutch and take out the seal but alfalfa cuts like butter with no wrapping. Make sure the saw is revved up all the time you cut. Jim

I need you to give that speech to some of the hayshakers around here, old! I keep telling them they have to slow down to make sight bales. I had net wrapped bales from one guy who sent his 16 year old duaghter to bale. She must have baled at 20 mph! I spent most of the winter pitching hav over the fence because when I took the wrapp off the bale literally fell apart and fell in the lanes! that was the last time he did our hay. The latest guy is much better.

(quoted from post at 22:39:10 05/27/12) I have made 2000LBS plus bales.

2000# PLUS bale of hay guessed or weighed on a scale??? I bought out of state hay last yr from 2 different farmers. Ist one said the bales weighed 1200#s,they average 920#. 2nd farmer said his bales weighed over 1000#s they weighed 840#s. Talk is easy scales if certified tell the truth. Isn't Missouri called the "show me state"??

Nice to have a few square ones for emergencies, but you's sure gonna enjoy the freedom of them round ones.... Don't complicate things, just stand them on end and unwrap as needed. You'll prolly find yourself putting a covered bale feeder on the pasture also... You can get as creative as you want.......

i do go slow with my 850 i have to stab it a couple times to get the spear in them.and i also already feed them in feeders outside.i thought they should unwrap up on end fairly easy.going to do it inside the barn in the winter .just gonna cut back on the squares.try to make life a little easier.

1st year I ran this NH850 behind my Oliver S88 I used 1st gear and every bale I tried to spike all I could do was push them around because the spike would not go in to them. I then tried to pick one up by chaining it in the bucket and ended up lifting one or both rear wheels of my 841 ford off the ground and that was with a back blade on with 6- 85lbs suit case weights on the blade and the rears filled with fluid. That year I ended up using a Cat 950 loader to move hay with and got the manual and soon learned I needed more speed to reduce how heavy the bales where. I now use 3rd gear and that works well. Good heavy bale at around 1800lbs give or take a little bit and nice and tight but not so tight as to be real hard to spike

Not being able to stick a spike into a bale can indicate too high moisture which causes a heavy bale.

Certified scales tell what bales weigh not guessing. NH doesn't advertise that a chain baler such as you have will make a 2000 lb. + bale!!!!!!!! If you don't believe me research the facts yourself. I'll bet NH advertised bale weight is when baling pure ALFALFA not grass hay.

Is it that time of year again already???? It seems like only two months ago that we were hearing all about Old's 5,000 lb bales and the different methods of weighing bales!!!

They make a special machine for that. I saw one at an auction once at a small dairy farm. You place the bale on a rotating platform and drive down the alley way with it turning as you go. I believe that it was powered by a little B&S engine. It was intended to run on concrete but it could probably be fitted with larger tires for outside. If I remember correctly it had a platform that the operator stood on.

Get a life dude. I have never said I made 5000lbs bale 1 ton yes which if your smart enough to figure things out are 2000lbs and yes a NH850 will do that. Bug off A hole had enough of this type of bull from but heads like you so leave me alone if you do not like what I say

I refuse to participate in the 5000# bale discussion but I seriously doubt that a NH 850 chain baler will make a 2000# plus bale in grass hay at even as slow as 1/2 MPH

I am not going to go out and pay the scale what I have and if you do not like what I say leave me alone what is it to you how I make a bale or how heavy they are so shut up already. I may not know the true weight but I know the tractor will lift a 2000lbs car with no problem but the first year I used this NH850 I could not lift the bales so what does that say??? So the bales had to come in around the same or more then the cars I would lift with it. People like you are why this site $ucks at times and many of the good people that where here are no long on and it is a shame because so much knowledge has been lost because of the few people like you and a number of others. If it also why I do not answers a number of people here any more also and from now on I will add you to the list s leave me alone and I'll leave you alone

Thats the way we do them, Ive even rebaled some that way. Takes about 10 mins per 4x5 with a good pitchfork operator.
